'Excellent': Journalist claims rarely-seen Derby County ace is 'one of the shrewdest signings' Warne has made

Paul Warne has been hailed for some of his transfer business at Derby County.

The 51-year-old was tasked with getting Derby County up last summer after failing at the first attempt.

The Rams snapped up the likes of Curtis Nelson, Sonny Bradley and Ryan Nyambe, before going onto win automatic promotion to the Championship.

Now Warne must keep them in the second division, keeping hold of their best players and also signing even more.

One player they were eager to keep hold of was Nyambe, despite only managing 19 appearances last term.

The defender joined on a free transfer after he was released by Wigan Athletic and made 17 starts, but endured a very stop-start campaign due to injury and his place in the Namibia national team at AFCON.

However, Nyambe clearly impressed Warne enough to earn himself a new three-year contract with the club, with his previous deal expiring this summer.

Ryan Nyambe has been ‘excellent’ for Derby County

Despite a difficult debut campaign, journalist Leigh Curtis has claimed that Nyambe is ‘one of the shrewdest signings’ ever made at Pride Park.

Writing on X, he said: “Nyambe is one of the shrewdest signings the club has made. Excellent until his injury against Charlton which ruled him out of the club’s promotion run-in. Fully recovered now and back for pre-season. A proper Championship defender.”

He will be key if he can stay fit next season

The 26-year-old will be hoping for a much smoother second season at Derby, while he will have to wait till December 2025 for the next AFCON tournament to come around.

Nyambe really caught the eye when he played and would have been a huge player for the Rams if he had been fit all season.

Having made 185 appearances in the Championship, Derby will be hopeful that he can make a real impact for them and play a key role in staying in the division.

The right-back position had been fairly nailed down by Kane Wilson last season, though he will face tough competition for his place if Nyambe can stay fit.
