Journalist provides transfer update on Derby's pursuit of ex-Premier League player who is available for free

A journalist has provided an update on Derby County’s pursuit of a free-agent target who has Premier League experience.

Derby County secured promotion to the Championship last season, finishing second in League One behind Portsmouth.

Ahead of returning to England’s second tier, the Rams have already begun a large squad overhaul.

On the incomings front, Derby have signed Ben Osborn from Sheffield United and Kayden Jackson from Ipswich Town, with both players arriving for free.

Jerry Yates has also joined the club on loan for the 2024/25 season and is set to add some firepower to the Rams’ attack.

As well as several new signings, manager Paul Warne has made some interesting decisions when it comes to outgoings.

Louie Sibley has been allowed to leave the club on a free transfer despite playing 42 times in 2023/24.

Sibley was not the only shock exit at Pride Park this summer, though. Joe Wildsmith was released at the end of his contract despite keeping the most clean sheets in League One last term.

Matt Ryan to Derby County transfer update

Following the departure of Wildmsith, Derby will, of course, need to strengthen between the sticks this summer.

Rotherham United shot-stopper Viktor Johanssen has been mooted as a potential option following the close of the previous campaign.

More recently, meanwhile, Derby were said to want to sign former Arsenal goalkeeper Matt Ryan.

Ryan spent 2023/24 in the Netherlands with AZ Alkmaar but is now a free agent after his contract with the Dutch club expired.

Now, journalist Alan Nixon has provided an update on Derby’s pursuit of the 32-year-old.

Taking to X/Twitter, Nixon was asked if there is anything in the Ryan to Derby links, to which he responded ‘It’s a possible option’.

Matt Ryan would be huge signing for Derby County

As Derby prepare for a relegation battle in the forthcoming campaign, it is crucial they have a solid defence.

The Rams conceded the fewest goals in League One in 2023/24 but the step up to the Championship will test their resolve.

However, the addition of Ryan would go a long way to ensuring the Derbyshire outfit are able to maintain their excellent defensive record.

The Australian is a vastly experienced keeper, playing 124 Premier League games for Arsenal and Brighton & Hove Albion.

He has also shone in Europe, featuring in the Champions League, Europa League, and Europa Conference League.

Ryan is a Premier League-quality goalkeeper and Derby signing him for free would be a major coup.
