‘Wow’: What Max Verstappen did during the British GP that Martin Brundle thought was ‘remarkably good’

The 2024 Formula 1 season has produced blockbuster race after blockbuster race and the British Grand Prix was no exception.

Mercedes started the race with a key advantage after locking out the front row thanks to brilliant performances from George Russell and Lewis Hamilton in qualifying.

Lining up behind them were the top two drivers in the Drivers’ Championship – Lando Norris and triple world champion Max Verstappen.

The beginning of the race was relatively tranquil with every team anticipating what was about to change the course of the race – the typical British summer weather.

Soon the rain started to fall and the drivers that benefitted were those that pitted at the right time and whether they put on the right tyres.

Charles Leclerc and Sergio Perez won’t want to look back at this race any time soon and the Red Bull driver did nothing to ease the increasing pressure on his future.

However, his teammate Verstappen once again drove brilliantly despite not having the quickest car and commentating on the race for Sky Sports F1, former driver Martin Brundle shared one moment that showed why he’s already considered an all-time great in the sport.

He had a trio of British drivers ahead of him on the grid, but by the time he was through the first few corners, Verstappen had already dispatched one of them.

Martin Brundle admires Max Verstappen’s race start at the British Grand Prix

Watching back a replay of the start of the race, Brundle said: “So few revs, wow, didn’t want to get any wheelspin, unbelievably few revs to get the car off the line.

“Turning in and remarkably good front grip as well and now he’s going to slide up in the inside, and this is a big risk move there for [Max] Verstappen, it’s so easy to run into the back of the other car.

“And he launches around the outside of turn four, so he can straighten the car up, get good traction, good drive out of it and takes the place from Lando Norris.”

Max Verstappen proves just how good he is at the British Grand Prix

After a difficult qualifying session where a damaged floor meant he could only set the fourth-fastest time in Q3, Verstappen had to bide his time during the race.

Despite getting past Norris at the beginning of the Grand Prix, both McLaren drivers passed him on track and Carlos Sainz was running right behind him.

However, Verstappen’s race changed during the rainy spells, with Red Bull absolutely nailing his strategy and a radio message from the team suggesting that he chose exactly the right lap to pit for intermediate tyres.

In the final stint, he pitted on the same lap as Hamilton, with the British driver choosing soft tyres and Verstappen going onto the hards.

It was another great call and meant he could easily overtake Norris to try and catch Hamilton in the final laps.

Unfortunately for Red Bull’s fans, he couldn’t close the gap and deny his old rival his first victory in nearly three years.

However, his championship lead once again increased, although the Constructors’ Championship once again looked less healthy for Red Bull after another pointless day for Perez.
