A red alert is in place for all of Croatia as the country continues to swelter through a heatwave, with Friday's temperature reaching 37 degrees Celsius — a level recorded in the northeastern region of Slavonia and southern Dalmatia. And there’s been little respite in the sea. Water temperatures in some areas hit 28 degrees Celsius. The zoo's resident brown bear Tony is getting treats of large ice cubes containing frozen fruit and meat. His keeper hides the ice cream in a different place each time, but the 12-year-old bear keeps finding it. This method is an attempt to mimic the animals' behaviour in the wild as much as possible. "They should not be imprisoned, but provided with methods, ways to move, to look for food and seek variety," said the head of animal feeding Anita Tsvetanova. Sofia's zoo is home to over 2,500 animals and the ice cream helps them cope with the Bulgarian heat. Watch more in the player above.

A 55-year-old American tourist has died while on Mount Etna in Sicily. The man was taken ill during an excursion on the southern side of the volcano, Italy's alpine rescue service said today. Rescuers said the cause of his illness was still unknown, but current high temperatures coupled with humidity may prove dangerous for tourists. “Tourists who participate in these excursions should not underestimate the risks related to high temperatures, strong humidity, and the sudden jump in altitude,” said Alfio Ferrara, a spokesman for the alpine rescue service. “Often they agree to take part in these...

A severe heatwave is scorching Hungary and putting its homeless population in life-threatening situations. To combat the heat and protect its population, the Hungarian government has issued a Code Red. This means that all social services must receive people on the streets to at least get water, take a bath and cool down. NGOs working with the homeless are also adapting to the emergency situation. "At this time of year, the care organisations try to discourage people from staying in the hot sun for longer periods of time, as this is the greatest danger," said Zoltán Aknai, director of the Shelt...

Just weeks after Greece was hit with its earliest ever heatwave in June, parts of the country are facing a new crisis: severe water shortages. A state of emergency has been declared in Sifnos in the Cyclades, Leros in the Dodecanese Islands, Sami in Kefalonia and in parts of Crete. Islanders are demanding urgent intervention as water supplies dry up. Water levels are also low in the peninsula of Attica, which encompasses Athens. On the island of Naxos in the South Aegean, the largest reservoir has dried up due to low rainfall and hot weather, news agency Reuters reports. What’s behind the wate...

A 2023 study by the University of Technology, Sydney found green roofs when combined with solar panels, not only increased biodiversity and solar output by 107 per cent but also reduced temperatures by a significant 8°C. Green roofs are experiencing a resurgence in interest since a new study published in January 2024 demonstrated that adding volcanic ash to them stabilises temperatures, keeps weeds away, is resilient to extreme weather, drains water efficiently, and is low maintenance. According to the latest market research, in 2023, the North American green roof sector grew by more than 45 p...

France is reducing the working hours of construction workers due to heatwaves. In some cases, companies send workers home but still pay their wages for the day. Most construction companies are getting used to dealing with the heat, as the problem is becoming increasingly frequent and limited working hours are now the norm. Despite around 30C in the shade, workers on a construction site in Toulouse were working in full sunshine. "It`s a real problem because accidents have already happened, and we are trying to anticipate them," Hugo Pastorello, a site supervisor, said. "We have to come to the s...

In a world increasingly disrupted by the ongoing climate crisis, it’s perhaps unsurprising that our oceans are feeling the long-term effects of marine heatwaves. Right on our doorstep, the Mediterranean is a particular hotspot for this phenomenon. Some areas of the sea can see temperature anomalies of 5, 6, or even 7 degrees above average. That is not good news for marine ecosystems, as habitats are disappearing and fish stocks are moving to different areas of the ocean. Pippa Moore is a professor of Marine Science at Newcastle University in the UK. She is hopeful that changes can be made to m...
