The Mediterranean Sea reached its highest-ever surface temperature last week, according to Spanish researchers. The average of 28.9°C on 15 August, calculated with data from the European Union’s Copernicus Earth observation programme, topped the previous record set in July last year. A maximum temperature for the day of 31.96°C was also recorded on the Egyptian coast at El-Arish. Almost the entire basin is suffering under the effects of a marine heatwave. Sea temperatures have spiked, particularly close to shore. But these warm waters aren’t unique to this summer and the region is a hotspot fo...

Extreme heat and cold cause approximately 407,500 deaths in Europe every year, and if nothing further is done to combat climate change, an additional 55,000 people will die annually by the year 2100 – a 13.5 per cent increase, according to new estimates from European Commission researchers. Currently, the vast majority of Europe’s temperature-related deaths are tied to cold weather, but extreme heat will become an increasingly lethal challenge, particularly in southern Europe and areas with more elderly people, according to the study, which was published in The Lancet Public Health00179-8%2Ffu...

"The feed is almost double what it was last year. And how is the price of livestock now? The price of livestock is 30 to 40 percent lower than a year ago” said Gîrtan. In order to keep his farm alive over winter, Gîrtan predicts he will sell half of his cattle. Representatives...

As the world continues to heat up, close to half a billion children globally are living in regions that experience at least twice as many extremely hot days as their grandparents did. That’s according to new research by the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF). The findings highlight the rapid escalation of extreme heat events, laying bare the fact that one in five children - that’s around 466 million - are exposed to these often dangerous conditions every year. UNICEF compared data from the 1960s with the average temperatures from 2020-2024. In the process, they discovered a dramatic incre...

Intense heat in Hungary has led to severe droughts which, in turn, has caused serious damage to the country's agriculture. Hungary is continuing to suffer under an extreme heatwave, with some areas reaching up to 40 degrees Celsius. Third level heat alerts have been issued across the country, which will remain in effect until Sunday night. Italy has issued red alert warnings in 22 cities as the country braces itself for an intense heat wave. People are being urged to avoid direct exposure to sunlight during the hottest hours of the day and to stay hydrated. In the Lazio region, which includes the capital Rome, an emergency plan has been launched to tackle the effects of the heatwave on people’s health.
