‘Not clicking’: Charles Leclerc relationship with key Ferrari individual ‘not working’ right now – journalist

Ferrari driver Charles Leclerc will be delighted to have seen the back of the first Formula 1 triple header of the season.

Charles Leclerc went into the three European races still enjoying the confidence gained from winning his home race in Monaco although questioning how Ferrari got things so wrong in Canada.

The 26-year-old would have hoped to emulate the heroics he performed in the principality in Spain, Austria and Great Britain but instead endured another three rounds of disappointment.

Leclerc fell behind Lando Norris in the Drivers’ Championship and the gap to leader Max Verstappen is now over 100 points meaning he’s now in the growing battle to finish second to the triple world champion.

Things haven’t been going well for the Italian manufacturer for some time and the upgrades Ferrari introduced in Spain have hindered the team rather than helped them.

Journalists Rebecca Clancy and Ben Hunt were speaking on the Inside The Piranha Club Podcast about Leclerc’s recent fortunes.

Ferrari decided to change Leclerc’s race engineer with Xavi Marcos being replaced by Bryan Bozzi.

However, Hunt believes that Leclerc and Bozzi’s relationship isn’t working at the moment and that’s contributing to some of the bad calls being made in recent races.

Charles Leclerc’s relationship with Bryan Bozzi ‘not working’ at Ferrari

Speakig about Ferrari, Clancy said: “Let’s talk about Ferrari because since Spain they have not had a good run.

“I think it’s fair to say that the upgrade they brought to the floor was a downgrade. They don’t really seem to understand and without understanding it, they’re not going anywhere.”

Hunt added: “We’ve spoken about relationships between Lewis [Hamilton] and his race engineer and I think Charles Leclerc and his race engineer, who is obviously new, that relationship’s not working at the moment.

“It’s going to take a little while to bed in. Lots of questions, lots of bad choices on Ferrari’s part but then again it’s easy to criticise.

“We don’t really know what’s going on within the team, hindsight’s great and everything but for whatever reason it’s not clicking for Ferrari.”

Charles Leclerc suffering from poor Ferrari strategy decisions in recent races

Looking back on the races since Leclerc’s win in Monaco makes for some disappointing reading for Ferrari fans.

Leclerc’s strategy choices in Canada were bizarre and at that point, it was clear that Leclerc and Bozzi weren’t clicking.

He was forced to pit to try and fix an engine issue, but at the end of the stop, they then decided to put him on slick tyres in wet conditions that saw him lapped just a few laps later.

Although strategy didn’t run his race in Austria, a bizarre fault in Sprint qualifying and a first-corner collision hampered his chances at the Red Bull Ring.

Ferrari were off the pace in Spain and then Leclerc was sent mixed messages by Bozzi during the changeable conditions at Silverstone.

He went onto intermediate tyres way too early and by the time they wanted to change them again, his race was already ruined.

Frederic Vasseur admitted they made a mistake with Leclerc’s strategy and Martin Brundle suggested that Leclerc was having an especially difficult time.

He’ll be hoping the races in Hungary and Belgium give him a chance to bounce back before the summer break.
