Longo Borghini wins women's Giro d'Italia

Italy's Elisa Longo Borghini held on to her overall lead to win the women's Giro d'Italia for the first time on Sunday.

Longo Borghini won the opening stage on July 7 and never relinquished the lead to win 21 seconds ahead of Belgian world champion Lotte Kopecky, with Australia's Neve Bradbury third.

The final stage over 117 kilometres from Pescara to L'Aquila was won by Kim Le Court of Mauritius.

Twice Olympic bronze medallist Longo Borghini was only one second ahead of Kopecky at the start but kept her at bay until the end, with Kopecky conceding defeat once Borghini sprinted away from her on the home straight to finish fourth in the stage.
