Mummified remains of climber missing for over 20 years found in Peru

The remains of a tourist who disappeared over 20 years ago have been found in the Peruvian Andes.

The body, with clothing and climbing tools still intact, is that of an American citizen who disappeared in 2002 after an avalanche on the Nevado Huascarán mountain in the northern centre of the country, according to several media reports citing the police.

Pictures show the remains, which were found at an altitude of 5,200 metres on Friday last week, and identified on Tuesday, still had intact climbing equipment such as boots with crampons, climbing harnesses and safety ropes. A driving licence was also found.

The newspaper La República reported, citing a local tour operator, that an avalanche buried three tourists on the snow-covered mountain in June 2002. The first body was found and identified two years ago, followed now by the second. There is still no trace of the remains of the third climber.

At 6,768 metres, Nevado Huascarán is Peru's highest mountain. The national park of the same name is a popular excursion destination and is one of the most important nature reserves in the country.
