Sebastian Vettel sends three-word message to Lewis Hamilton after winning the British Grand Prix

Sebastian Vettel reacted to Lewis Hamilton’s victory at the British Grand Prix, having won the race for a record ninth time in his Formula 1 career.

The seven-time world champion ended his 945-day win drought at Silverstone with a stunning victory in front of his home crowd, breaking the record previously held by Michael Schumacher for most wins at a single circuit (8).

A key tyre call to slicks in the final laps of the race after rain had eased enabled Hamilton to take the lead from Lando Norris, who dropped to third after being overtaken by a charging Max Verstappen at the end.

Verstappen had a tyre advantage over both Norris and Hamilton having pitted for a new set of hard tyres instead of worn softs, with Hamilton only hanging on to the win by 1.4 seconds at the chequered flag.

Sebastian Vettel praises ‘GOAT’ Lewis Hamilton

Vettel won the British GP at the 2019 race, after Hamilton and Kimi Raikkonen collided at the start which put the Mercedes driver towards the back of the grid.

The pair went on to battle for the Drivers’ Championship that year, with Hamilton eventually going on to win his sixth world championship.

Taking to Instagram, Hamilton’s old rival posted a picture with a three-word message: “GOAT. Congrats Lewis.”

Two most recent world champions make the right call

Vettel knows exactly what it can be like at Silverstone during tricky conditions after he managed a late podium in the 2015 race, when rain hit the track with a handful of laps to spare.

The Ferrari driver pitted at the same time as Hamilton as the rain intensified, while everyone else pitted either several laps before or too late, which cost them crucial time and positions.

Much like that race, F1’s two most recent world champions pulled off strategic masterstrokes to finish first and second.

Hamilton could be heard telling Norris what cost the McLaren driver a shot at victory in the post-race cooldown, while 1996 world champion and 1994 British GP winner Damon Hill sent Hamilton a message on social media.
