Toni Kroos has apologised to Pedri for the challenge which ended the Spain midfielder's Euro 2024 campaign.

In what ended up being the final match of Kroos' illustrious career, Kroos fouled Pedri in the game's opening minutes. Despite his best efforts to continue, the Barcelona youngster eventually succumbed to his injury and was forced to leave the field after just eight minutes.

Spain manager Luis de la Fuente has claimed Kroos should have been sent off for the challenge, and the former Real Madrid midfielder has now apologised for the incident.

In his lengthy farewell to football, Kroos wrote: "This is important to me. I apologise and get well soon, Pedri! Obviously, I didn't mean to hurt you. Have a speedy recovery and all the best. You're a great player."

Pedri was quickly sent for scans on the injury, which had Barcelona fearing he may not be ready for pre-season.

According to Mundo Deportivo, Pedri has been diagnosed with a sprain in his left knee which will keep him sidelined for between four and six weeks.

It means Pedri will miss Barcelona's first pre-season campaign under new manager Hansi Flick. The USA tour brings games against Manchester City, Real Madrid and AC Milan before August 6, but Pedri will be forced to watch from the sidelines.

In the meantime, Pedri is expected to remain with the Spain camp for the rest of their Euro 2024 journey, which continues with a semi-final clash with France on Tuesday.
