Report: £50m player who Anthony Gordon wants Newcastle to sign is now expected to be sold

Newcastle United may have the chance to make Anthony Gordon’s summer transfer wish come true.

While there has been speculation about the 23-year-old leaving St James’ Park this summer, the expectation is that he will remain on Tyneside and continue to star for Eddie Howe’s side – and possibly sign a contract extension.

The Magpies will reportedly show Gordon some love amid fears that his head has been turned by talk of a move to Liverpool, and they could certainly do that by taking the transfer advice he recently gave the club.

Anthony Gordon wants Newcastle to sign ‘top player’

Gordon is currently away on international duty, representing England at Euro 2024.

During an interview with TalkSPORT last month, he was asked about the rumour that Newcastle United are interested in signing Marc Guehi from Crystal Palace. This came after the defender excelled in England’s Euros opener against Serbia.

In response, Gordon said: “I haven’t actually seen the Newcastle links, but it goes without saying I’d absolutely love him to come because he’s a top player and he’d make us a better team.”

What is expected to happen to Marc Guehi this summer

Gordon would love it if Newcastle signed Guehi, and he is certainly a player who could be available for a move.

That is according to the Sun, who report that Guehi is expected to leave Crystal Palace this summer ahead of the 2024/25 season.

They state that the Eagles are looking to receive around £50million for the centre-back, which is similar to the amount they are getting from Bayern Munich for Michael Olise.

That would make him affordable for Newcastle, who are in the market for another central defender despite the arrival of Lloyd Kelly from Bournemouth.

The big issue could be the competition, with clubs queuing up to sign a player who has probably been England’s best performer at Euro 2024. In fact, the Sun add that even Real Madrid are now interested.

Newcastle transfer would come as a shock

While Guehi is an exciting player to be linked with Newcastle this summer, it would be a major surprise if he was wearing a black and white shirt next season and playing his home matches at St James’ Park – despite that being his favourite ground in terms of atmosphere after Selhurst Park.

Given how well he is playing for England at the Euros, there is going to be so much interest in his signature. He has massively enhanced his reputation with his performances in Germany, and it will likely end in an almighty transfer tussle.

And it is a transfer tussle that Newcastle feel likely to avoid. The Magpies try to box clever in the transfer market, yet battling for a star coming out of a major tournament would be the exact opposite of that.

There is also the issue of the fee. While Newcastle could pay £50million for Guehi, they also want to spend £50million or more on a right winger. And that position is more of a priority, which may limit the Magpies’ desire to splash out on a defender.

Toon fans would love to sign Guehi, and so would Gordon. It looks like someone will, with a move away from Palace seemingly on the horizon. However, it would be a shock if that move was to Newcastle United.
