Will climate change force Belgian vineyards to put water in their wine? At first glance, rising temperatures seem to favour the development of vineyards in a country famous for its beer — in 2023, 3.4 million litres of wine were produced in Belgium, an increase of 13 per cent on the previous year. For a decade now, the number of vineyards in Belgium has been rising steadily as a result of climate change, according to Sébastien Doutreloup, a climatologist at the University of Liège. For its help in improving wine production, climate change also brings with it a number of obstacles. Climatic haz...

Francesco La Porta has lived in Paris for many years, but he is originally from Venice. Earlier this year, he opened a restaurant in the French capital that has brought a little slice of his hometown to the city. Osteria Goto recreates the concept of a traditional Venetian bar - known as a bacaro - with typical food and drink. Even the name recalls the canal city - ‘goto’ is Venetian dialect for glass. Bacari are beloved, idiosyncratic places in Venice where you’re guaranteed to find a version of the city still untainted by overtourism and over-commercialisation. Here’s how to identify a bacar...

Ten years ago, during routine maritime cleaning, residents of the picturesque bayside town of Ika, Croatia, accidentally discovered a large plateau about 20 metres deep near the freshwater source. Inspired by the stories of undersea-aged champagne, they came up with the idea to store local wine there. In 2014, they placed the first few hundred bottles into the sea. After a year, when they retrieved the first bottles, they were delighted by the wine's special aroma, prompting them to continue storing new bottles underwater every year. “In comparison to other wines aged in water, specifically th...

They say Champagne gets better with age, but would you dare taste a bottle from the 19th-century? On a recent dive expedition, Polish technical divers stumbled upon a wreck that could easily have been mistaken for an old fishing boat. The sonar didn’t reveal much, suggesting there was little of interest beneath the surface. Nonetheless, divers Marek Cacaj and Pawel Truszynski decided to investigate further. Their curiosity paid off when they spent two hours exploring a well-preserved 19th-century sailing ship 190 feet deep in the Baltic Sea, uncovering a stash of vintage Champagne bottles stil...

As with many European port-cities, Porto has a colourful history. Initially a small settlement of Celtic tribes, centuries of maritime trade brought Romans, Visigoths, and Moors before falling under the rule of Portugal when the city became - like the wine that followed - fortified. Commercial success with wine, textile and salt exports saw investment and infrastructure in the mid to late Middle Ages resulting in a number of impressive buildings and a charming network of winding streets flanked by colourful apartments. Gastronomy is a route, arguably the finest, into understanding this history...

Visit the northern Italian town of Valdobbiadene on a Thursday night and you’ll find a few hundred people on an evening walk with their mayor. Luciano Fregonese was re-elected as mayor of the town in the Veneto region in June. Since his first mandate a decade ago, the 47-year-old has gained 50kg, which he blames on the job’s “convivial obligations” and long working hours. He has vowed to return to the 90kg he weighed when first elected and is now undertaking weekly walks to slim down. The Italian town walking weekly to lose weight“For sure, it was a question of laziness and a sedentary lifesty...

Germany's traditional Pfalz (Palatinate) wine-growing region is in the midst of a fierce debate following a decision to abolish its decades-long tradition of appointing a wine queen. Instead, Germany's second-largest wine-growing region will appoint a Pfalz wine ambassador, replacing crowns with lapel pins. The honour is due to be bestowed in October, in the town of Neustadt along the western German wine route. The row pits traditionalists who want to uphold the old custom, including local politicians and former wine royalty, against those calling for a long overdue reform, which would also al...

If you think of Paris, you’ll likely think of iconic buildings like the Eiffel Tower and the Arc de Triomphe. Beneath the streets of the City of Lights, though, is a hidden world. Les Caves du Louvre is a different side to Paris. Built in the 18th century, the lesser known tourist spot is an underground network of cellars and tunnels, previously used as an elaborate wine cellar for King Louis XIV. At the turn of that century, the late king’s sommelier had ordered the construction of the space, one that meant wine could be supplied to the palace in complete discretion. "The cellars… were built ...

White wine remained the most popular of wines produced in Germany in 2023, followed by red and rosé, according to figures by the German Wine Institute (DWI). As in the previous year, white wine accounted for two thirds of the total. The proportion of quality-attested red wines remained stable at a good fifth (21%) and rosé remained unchanged at 13%, according to DWI spokesman Ernst Büscher. Just over half (51%) of all German quality-tested wines on offer were dry, according to the May figures. This was one percentage point more than in 2022, but 8 percentage points more than 10 years ago (2013...
