The world is falling well short of a promise made at global climate talks last year to triple the amount of wind power, according to a report by energy think tank Ember released last week. Last December, countries at the UN COP28 climate conference committed to tripling all renewable electricity by 2030. Wind power specifically must triple to achieve that, according to the International Energy Agency (IEA) and others. Examining national targets set by 70 countries that account for 99 per cent of existing wind power, Ember, an energy nonprofit based in London, projects that over the next six ye...

For the new venture, the two companies will operate approximately 3,000 high power charging points over the next five years, which will equate to 150kW or more and will be distributed across 300 EV hubs. The fast-charging stations are expected to be able to fully charge an EV battery in up to one hour, due to the use of direct current, instead of alternating current. The hubs will be located in key areas in and around cities and will be provided with renewable energy from both SSE and TotalEnergies. Many hubs are already under construction with the development research needed for several other...

The UK’s new Labour government has scrapped a de facto ban on onshore wind farms in England, opening up the potential for every UK home to be powered by clean energy. New Chancellor Rachel Reeves said in a speech on Monday that she would bring an end to the Conservatives' “absurd” restrictions on the construction of onshore wind farms. The Conservative Party were in power for the last 14 years. Reeves added that decisions should be made nationally and not locally like they previously were. Labour says it will consult on whether large wind farms should be considered as nationally significant in...

Offshore wind has become a staple of renewable energy production. But so far it has been mostly limited to shallow waters, restricting how many countries can take advantage of it. That could soon change thanks to floating wind. The technology consists of a turbine mounted on a buoyant substructure and anchored to the seabed with chains. This means it can be deployed in seas of 300 metres deep and more, compared to the more traditional system of mounting turbines on the seabed, which becomes uneconomical in depths of more than 60 metres. Because it allows wind production in deeper waters, the t...

Renewable energy was the leading source of electricity in the EU in 2023, according to preliminary data from Eurostat. Renewables accounted for 44.7 per cent of all electricity production generating 1.21 million Gigawatt-hours (GWh) - a 12.4 per cent increase from 2022. Rapid installation of new solar and wind projects across the bloc has helped push this figure up. Electricity from fossil fuels overall fell by 19.7 per cent in comparison, contributing 0.88 GWh or 32.5 per cent of the EU’s power. Natural gas supply fell by 7.4 per cent from 2022 - the lowest it’s been since 1995. The biggest d...

In a small boat bobbing in the waves between towering offshore windturbines, researchers in Europe’s Baltic Sea reach into the frigid water and remove long lines stretched between the pylons onto which mussels and seaweed are growing. It’s part of efforts to explore multiple uses for remote wind parks far out at sea, such as fresh seafood production. Run by the Swedish state-owned power firm Vattenfall and Denmark’s Aarhus University, the four-year project started in 2023 off the Danish east coast at Scandinavia’s largest wind farm, Kriegers Flak. With its first harvest just 18 months later, i...

A new wind farm in Portugal has obtained environmental approval from the government - and once built it will become the country’s largest. Renewable energy company Iberdrola will integrate the plant into the Tâmega pumped-storage hydro complex in northern Portugal. The new wind farm will have a capacity of 274 MW, able to support the annual consumption of 128,000 homes. Iberdrola says they will introduce a range of measures to safeguard the environment around the new plant. Portugal’s largest wind farm gets the green lightIberdrola has obtained the second and final environmental permit for the...

Germany's largest power producer, RWE AG, has announced it is to construct 1.6 gigawatts of offshore wind capacity in the North Sea. It took the decision despite persistent supply-chain challenges. While demand for renewable energy is surging, soaring costs have halted some offshore wind projects in both the UK and the US. Building on the first project will start in 2025 and finish in 2026, the company said. It will start building the second wind farm in 2027, with operations beginning in 2029. Combined, the projects, known as the Nordseecluster, will consist of 104 wind turbines that produce ...
