Our guests for week are Shada Islam from the New Horizons Project, Richard Schenk from MCC Brussels, and Antonios Nestoras from the European Liberal Forum. Panelists comment on a changing of the guard at meetings of EU ministers — where Belgium has passed the presidency baton to the much more controversial pick of Hungary. Armed with the provocative slogan "Make Europe Great Again", Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán started his six-month stint with a bang. After visiting Brussels, he popped to Ukraine to meet President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, before making a surprise trip to Russia to see Vla...

Russian President Vladimir Putin welcomed Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán to Moscow on Friday for a rare meeting with a European leader to discuss peace proposals for Ukraine. Orbán's visit comes only days after he made a similar unannounced trip to Ukraine, where he met with President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and proposed that Ukraine consider agreeing to an immediate cease-fire with Russia. “The number of countries that can talk to both warring sides is diminishing,” Orbán said. “Hungary is slowly becoming the only country in Europe that can speak to everyone.” The reaction from Ukraine was...

Russia has been hit by an overnight Ukrainian drone strike in the southern region of Krasnodar. Local media reports at least one person has been killed, while Krasnodar region Governor Veniamin Kondratyev wrote on Telegram that a home had been “completely destroyed”. Other drone attacks have been reported in the neighbouring Russian republic of Adygea, as well as the central Tombov region, which have set several oil depots on fire. Russia’s Defence Ministry did not mention the drone attack in Tombov in any of its statements. Meanwhile, the ministry has released footage which it says shows Russ...

His desperate act serves as a haunting emblem of Russia’s national policy under Russian President Vladimir Putin’s reign. Today, Russification has reached unprecedented heights, eclipsing even the Soviet era in its scope and intensity. The marginalization of national cultures and languages is taking place with the active assistance of the Russian state. Putin was personally involved in the abolition of language instruction in the sch...

Since the very beginning of the Russia-Ukraine war in February 2022, the European Union has taken many measures and posed sanctions against Russia and those deemed to be “supporting, financing or implementing actions” in the war effort. Unfortunately, in a hurried approach, some of the bureaucrats who put together the list and the criteria for applying personal sanctions against hundreds of individuals took what now appears to be a scorched earth policy. On many occasions, they seemingly relied on simple Google searches and Russia’s rich list, much of which would not have stood up in court. In...

A Russian court on July 2 sentenced a 19-year-old to 12 years in prison for "treason" after he was accused of donating money to the Ukrainian army. "The Rostov regional court found the man guilty and sentenced him to a punishment in the form of 12 years in a strict penal colony," Russia's Federal Security Service (FSB) said in comments reported by Kremlin state media. It said the teenager had sent money to help Ukraine's army buy food and drones. Russian President Vladimir Putin's crackdown on dissent since the start of the full-scale invasion of Ukraine has seen thousands of his citizens arre...
