Francesco La Porta has lived in Paris for many years, but he is originally from Venice. Earlier this year, he opened a restaurant in the French capital that has brought a little slice of his hometown to the city. Osteria Goto recreates the concept of a traditional Venetian bar - known as a bacaro - with typical food and drink. Even the name recalls the canal city - ‘goto’ is Venetian dialect for glass. Bacari are beloved, idiosyncratic places in Venice where you’re guaranteed to find a version of the city still untainted by overtourism and over-commercialisation. Here’s how to identify a bacar...

I’m sitting on a squishy, low-slung chair in Venice Marco Polo airport lounge. There’s a distant view of the canal city from the big glass windows and I’m drinking a sunset-coloured spritz with a plate of ‘cicchetti’ or traditional Venetian snacks. I’m normally a budget traveller who would consider an airport lounge an unaffordable luxury. I know many people think like me, so I talked to Christopher Evans, CEO of lounge network Priority Pass, about why he thinks it’s worth it for a stress-reducing start or end to a holiday. How COVID has changed airport habitsTravel and the travel industry hav...

Venice's tourist tax trial earned the lagoon city €2.2 million, so why is it being branded a 'failure'? “The ticket is a failure, as demonstrated by city data,” says Giovanni Andrea Martini, an opposition city council member. The daytripper fee drew many opponents over the years it took the city to get it up and running. After years of delays, some due to Covid, visitors have been charged €5 on 29 days this year, mostly weekends and holidays. Authorities have said the levy will continue and could be doubled for 2025, bringing it up to €10. Did the tax help to combat overtourism?Over the weeken...

Venice wants to keep charging an entrance fee for day visitors when a trial period for the charge - the world's first such scheme - ends this weekend. The city plans to take account of demand in its new pricing and double the fee from €5 ($5.4) to up to €10 when the city on Italy's Adriatic coast is particularly busy, Michele Zuin, the city councillor responsible for finances, told a local newspaper. The nearly month-long trial put more than than €2 million ($2.1 million) into the city's coffers. On some days, more than 25,000 paying guests were registered. Zuin, in a story in Il Gazzettino, s...
