After dengue fever outbreaks in Europe put travellers on red alert in spring, cases of another potentially deadly, mosquito-borne virus have now been reported. West Nile virus has been detected in two individuals in Spain and Italy. According to the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC), the infections were acquired locally rather than on trips to tropical regions. Strikes at Aer Lingus are looking increasingly likely over the coming weeks after an overwhelming majority of pilots voted in favour of industrial action. The results emerged from a paper ballot organised by the Irish Airline Pilots' Association (IALPA) over the weekend, in which 99% (of the 89% of pilots who voted) supported action, up to and including a strike.
