A 55-year-old American tourist has died while on Mount Etna in Sicily. The man was taken ill during an excursion on the southern side of the volcano, Italy's alpine rescue service said today. Rescuers said the cause of his illness was still unknown, but current high temperatures coupled with humidity may prove dangerous for tourists. “Tourists who participate in these excursions should not underestimate the risks related to high temperatures, strong humidity, and the sudden jump in altitude,” said Alfio Ferrara, a spokesman for the alpine rescue service. “Often they agree to take part in these...

"Go home!", cries out a man in swimming togs, frantically waving at a group of bewildered tourists trying to access the Caló des Moro, one of Majorca’s most famous and picturesque beaches. He is one of the dozens of residents who had come early that Sunday to occupy the site, in protest againsst the "massification" of tourism, which they say has "devastating effects" on their island, and their lives. “We have cruises [cruise ships] every day with thousands of people. We have a flight every minute! It’s cars, it’s pollution. Beaches, restaurants are full of the streets are full of people! We’re...

All over Europe, countries are taking measures against overtourism and Athens is not an exception. The last two years have shown the city’s struggle with the influx of visitors. A few years ago the goal was to have tourists all year round. Now that has been achieved, but at what cost? Athens welcomed more than 7 million tourists in 2023, and experts predict a 20% increase this year, making the once-empty August streets a distant memory. While this surge boosts the economy, contributing to GDP and tax revenues, it also brings significant challenges, putting major strain on inadequate infrastruc...

Some praise them as brave, others dismiss them as stupid: macho locals and tourists alike who test themselves by running away from six fighting bulls as they charge along a winding cobble-stoned route to Pamplona's bullring. It's the highlight of the nine-day festival in the northern Spanish city - the early morning “encierros,” or bull runs, which began on Friday, when thousands of daredevils started to race against six bulls. Spectators watch from balconies and wooden barricades set up along the course. The spectacle is televised nationally. The rest of each day is for eating, drinking, danc...

With record-breaking numbers of visitors set to hit Spain this summer, the Costa del Sol is taking a pre-emptive strike against one less talked-about side effect of overtourism: pee. Taking inspiration from the northern Spanish town of Vigo, which introduced fines of up to €750 for “physiological evacuation on the beach or in the sea” two years ago, Marbella is following suit by more than doubling its own fine (previously €300) to match Vigo’s. Last week Marbella city councillors voted ‘sí’ to protect the sea, approving an ordinance that bans underwater urination at 25 beaches in the Malaga mu...

Georgia's summer season has begun but a significant share of visitors are missing: Israelis. The ongoing war between Israel and Hamas has meant Israelis are less able or unwilling to travel internationally. This drop in numbers is being felt in Georgia which usually welcomes many visitors from Israel. "The loss is noticeable. The situation in the region has affected the number of tourists from Israel," says Levan Giorgadze from Tbilisi Free Walking Tours. "Compared to previous years, the number of tourists from Israel has decreased noticeably. I wouldn't say that they don't come at all anymore...

For the first time, Malaga is putting the brakes on the proliferation of tourist accommodation, with the city council now limiting new licences to properties with a separate entrance. Malaga thus joins other cities and territories that have promoted similar or more restrictive measures, such as Balearic Islands, San Sebastian, Barcelona, Gijón, Madrid, Seville and Valencia, where a one-year moratorium on new tourist housing licences came into effect on 30 May. According to the Andalusian Regional Government Register, Malaga has 12,124 dwellings licensed for tourist use. In the whole of Spain t...

Barcelona city council has announced a radical plan to rid the city of its roughly 10,000 tourist flat licences over the next five years, according to local media reports. The measure seeks to address the growing national housing crisis, which is particularly acute in touristic cities such as Barcelona. It will prioritise residential over tourist use in one of Europe's most visited cities. The plan reflects a global trend of cities beginning to combat the effects of mass tourism on local life.
