Dennis DeYoung has only just discovered that the Cars hated Styx. He was responding to a 2006 interview republished online by Classic Rock last month, which it seems he’s never encountered before. In the article, the late Ric Ocasek spoke of the Cars’ early days: “We opened for about anybody in the beginning. We opened for bands that we really hated, like Styx. Most of those bands would go watch us on the side of the stage to see what the fuck was going on. And it seemed that the people were relating to us and not relating to them. So they got a little pissed.” DeYoung wrote on his Facebook pa...

Dennis DeYoung had big touring plans for 2020. But the former Styx vocalist, like his peers, had to cancel all his road work in early March that year due to the pandemic. As time passed, it felt like an unexpected milestone had been added to his timeline and he doesn’t like it. “The greatest disappointment to me is that I didn’t know my last show was my last show,” DeYoung tells UCR. “So in the back of my mind, I have to correct that at some point here.” But as we learned during a recent conversation with the songwriter, it hasn’t been idle time. He’s been working to complete a memoir and was ...

Dennis DeYoung has been out of Styx for 25 years. The band chose to replace him as they prepared to tour in support of 1999’s Brave New World. The singer, as he shares, found himself unexpectedly ill and unable to go on the road immediately, felt helpless. “I was begging for my life and for my job when this happened,” he tells UCR now. “As sick as I was, I didn’t really feel I could fight back.” Both sides eventually carried on with their separate careers. But when Styx began performing “The Best of Times” earlier this year for the first time since 2007, DeYoung felt a fresh twinge of pain and...

During a recent interview, Shaw explained how he was able to let go of his “resentment list,” which included long harbored animosity towards DeYoung. The Styx guitarist claimed he had “no hard feelings” towards the band’s former singer, adding that he was “honored to play” the DeYoung-penned song “The Best of Times” during Styx’s shows. In a message shared with fans via Facebook (see below), DeYoung took an acerbic tone. READ MORE: Tommy Shaw Explains How He Stopped Resenting Dennis DeYoung “A quarter of a ce...

Styx guitarist Tommy Shaw has explained how he was able to let go of lingering resentment towards the band’s previous singer, Dennis DeYoung. The frontman’s penchant for bombastic, rock opera-style tunes clashed with his bandmates, and contributed to Styx’s hiatus from 1984 to 1990. The group reformed, but DeYoung, who had a reputation for being creatively controlling, continued to bristle with the other musicians. In 1999, the singer was dismissed from the band. Shaw has assumed some of the vocal duties ever since. The split from DeYoung was contentious, though in recent years the singer has ...

Tommy Shaw believes Styx deserves to be in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, and he hopes he and his bandmates are alive if they finally get the call. During a conversation Cleveland.com, Shaw was asked why Styx has yet to be inducted into the Hall despite being eligible since 1998. “I hope we all live long enough to find the answer to that question,” the rocker responded. “But that’s not for me to decide.” READ MORE: Tommy Shaw: Styx Is ‘Powerless’ Regarding Rock Hall Consideration A look at the Hall’s track record shows that Shaw’s concerns are valid. Styx has been writing songs for decades. While it’s not unusual to sometimes realize part of a composition sounds like an existing song, singer and guitarist Tommy Shaw was still concerned. That’s one thing that he shared with UCR during a recent conversation as the band was getting ready for their upcoming summer tour with Foreigner that begins June 11 in Grand Rapids. It’s been a busy year already for the group. They’ve been out doing headlining shows, while also breaking in a new bass player, Terry Gowan, who stepped in after longtime bassist Ricky Phillips announced his departure. During a...
