Miami Beach (United States) (AFP) - The US city of Miami Beach prepared Thursday to impose a curfew to stem a wave of violence linked to the influx of revellers to Florida for the phenomenon known as spring break. The decision came after two shootings that left five people injured in recent days. Last year police also imposed a curfew after arresting more than 1,000 people over the course of six weeks for street fights and vandalism. The decision comes after two shootings that left five people injured in recent days. City officials will meet Tuesday to finalize the curfew. "We can't endure this anymore," Mayor Dan Gelber said Monday as he announced the decision. "We don't ask for spring break. We don't promote it. We don't encourage it. We just endure it, and frankly, it's not something we want to endure. We don't want spr...

While we can’t tell you whether or not to disregard social distancing, experts are already warning of a third wave of the coronavirus that could hit Tokyo. Perhaps the best way to avoid the crowds during hanami s...

Doesn’t everyone love hanami (flower viewing)? Around spring, sakura (cherry blossoms) are blooming in Tokyo and much of Japan’s lower half. Unfortunately, due to the coronavirus, it isn’t recommended that you and your friend gather on a blue tarp and drink under the pretty pinktrees this year. Still, there is always next year for hanami. That’s part of the beauty of cherry blossoms. Their very existence is temporary. But how did flower viewing even start? It seems as normal a thing to do in Japan as reading manga or renting a goat. Let’s take a quick look at the history and culture surroundin...

“Sakura, sakura, ima saki hokuru” (桜、桜、今咲き誇る; cherry blossom, now you are in full bloom) sang Naotaro Moriyama, son of the gorgeous Japanese folk and Jazz singer, Ryoko Moriyama. There are countless songs written and sung about cherry blossoms, as it’s the most important season here in Japan. The time for children to graduate from one grade or school and move on to the next; the moment when your first career begins or you start a new one. Either way, it’s always been the epitome of change. It’s hard to fully comprehend how deeply this time of year resonates with the Japanese people. Perhaps we...
