Here is the first song with clean vocals by 10 extreme metal bands who never used them at first! As metal fans, we often like our music to be overpoweringly vicious in every respect, with a non-negotiable feature being the gnarliest growls, croaks, snarls, screeches, gurgles and bleghs! That’s why it can be so controversial when certain bands start incorporating some – or all – clean singing. Eventually, though, even the most ferocious artists will probably decide to add softer singing to their repertoire (whether subtly or overtly). On Aug. 19, 2009, Paul Stanley proved he was done playing games with “Modern Day Delilah,” the first new Kiss song in 11 years. The band’s founding frontman only agreed to end the decade-plus studio hiatus that followed the release of 1998’s in-name-only original lineup “reunion” album Pyscho Circus after setting some important ground rules: no more disco, concept album or grunge trend-chasing, no ballads and no outside songwriters or producers. “I was through second-guessing or being second-guessed,” Stanley declared in his 2014 biography Face the Music: A Life Exposed. “At least if we did so...

Marilyn Manson has debuted his second new song of the summer, “Raise the Red Flag.” As was the case with the video for “As Sick As the Secrets Within,” comments have been disabled. The song comes amid Manson’s tour supporting Five Finger Death Punch, his first proper tour since 2019 and since several high-profile sexual assault and abuse lawsuits were filed against him. Many of those cases are ongoing as the shock rock musicians mounts his comeback. In the video for “Raise the Red Flag,” Manson’s backing band makes their first recorded appearance after debuting onstage on Aug. 2. Flanking the ...

At their Aug. 9 show in Inglewood, California, Megadeth played the So Far, So Good… So What! deep cut “Liar” for the first time in 18 years. It appears the song may stick around in the set, too, as the thrash legends performed “Liar” the following night as well. Even before the pair of recent 2024 performances, “Liar” has been quite the rarity and was only played eight times prior in the 21st century. Beyond Megadeth’s 1988 tour in support of their third record, this song was never played live more than 9 times in any following year. The song is notoriously about ex-Megadeth guitarist Chris Po...

Meshuggah vocalist Jens Kidman roars on “The Last Ballad of Damrod,” the first original song off The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power Season Two soundtrack. It was composed by Emmy-Award winner Bear McCreary and also features metal drummer Gene Hoglan (Dethklok, Dark Angel, ex-Testament, ex-Death). Don’t let the title deceive you — this is not some sappy ballad. Not even close. Pounding tribal drums and battle-cry horns help this cinematic symphonic offering conjure instant visuals in your head as Damrod, a murderous troll, gets hungry and starts severing limbs, snapping bones and consumi...
