Slovakia’s Mountain Rescue Service introduced a location-sharing feature to its rescue app at the beginning of 2024, amid an increasing number of fatal accidents in the mountains. To help lost or injured tourists in the mountains, Slovakia’s Mountain Rescue Service launched an app called HZS in 2020. The new feature allows the helicopter rescue medical service to locate people in need of help in the mountains with coordinates. According to Travel to Slovakia, a state-owned marketing organisation, rescuers can locate a lost person with an accuracy of within 20 to 30 metres while using the app. ...

Part of a hotel in a western German town has collapsed, leaving two people dead and several others trapped in the wreckage, authorities said on Wednesday. Fourteen people were in the hotel in Kröv when one story of the building collapsed at about 11 pm CET on Tuesday. Police said five were able to get out of the building unhurt because they weren't in the part that collapsed, but others were trapped. A rescue operation is ongoing, but reaching them is proving difficult because the collapse of one story left two ceilings lying on top of each other, according to Joerg Teusch, fire and disaster p...

Gaza’s Health Ministry says at least 274 Palestinians were killed in the Israeli air and ground raid that rescued four hostages held by Hamas. The ministry said on Sunday that around 700 people were also wounded in Saturday’s operation. The United Nations and other international institutions and experts, as well as Palestinian authorities in the West Bank — rivals of Hamas — say the Gaza ministry has long made a good-faith effort to account for the dead under the most difficult conditions. The EU's top foreign affairs chief posted that "the bloodbath must end immediately." The operation deep i...

TV images showed firefighters shifting rubble by hand from the flattened three-story building in Kucukcekmece on the city’s European side. Two injured people were pulled from the debris, broadcaster CNN Turk reported. The Istanbul governor’s office said the structure collapsed at 8:40am local time. The cause was not immediately clear. More than 59,000 people were killed last year when a magnitude 7.8 earthquake struck parts of southern Turkey and neighbouring Syria. The disaster highlighted the poor enforcement of building regulations in Turkey.

Humanitarian organisations in Papua New Guinea have warned of a possible second landslide and a disease outbreak at the scene of the country's largest mass-casualty disaster in recent memory, which saw hundreds injured and killed by a massive landslide. A UN official said the water streams and scores of bodies buried by the tons of debris that swept over a village on May 24 are together posing a major risk of further catastrophe even as rescuers struggle to help those still trapped. A mass of boulders, earth and splintered trees devastated Yambali in the South Pacific nation's remote highlands...

Los Angeles (AFP) - Sometimes all you have to do is ask for "HELP": That's what three men stranded on a deserted Pacific island learned earlier this week, writing the message in palm fronds which were spotted by US rescuers. The trio, all experienced mariners in their 40s, became stranded on a lonely island after setting off from Micronesia's Polowat Atoll on March 31 in their motor-powered skiff which subsequently experienced damage. They were reported missing last Saturday by a woman who told the US Coast Guard her three uncles never returned from Pikelot Atoll, a tiny island in the remote W...

Gaviota (United States) (AFP) - Denise Christ regularly comes across injured wildlife in her work rescuing beached or stranded marine mammals along the California coast. But she's been shocked by the hundreds of sea lions and dolphins found on the shore in recent weeks, dead or dying from neurotoxin poisoning. "Heartbreaking, to say the least," said Christ, the Ventura County stranding coordinator for the Channel Islands Marine and Wildlife Institute (CIMWI). The animals were sickened by domoic acid, a neurotoxin produced by algae that are a food source for fish, which are then eaten by sea li...

Los Angeles (AFP) - After their Oscar-winning movie "Free Solo," about a daredevil rock climber, Elizabeth Chai Vasarhelyi and Jimmy Chin found an even more remarkable true story for their next film -- the rescue of a boys' soccer team from a Thai cave in 2018. The husband-and-wife team had watched transfixed with the rest of the world as amateur divers, Navy SEALS and hundreds of volunteers pulled off a seemingly impossible rescue through miles of dark, perilous, flooded caves. Once the 12 boys and their coach had been plucked miraculously from their subterranean prison, the documentary maker...
