Approvals for new coal-fired power plants in China dropped sharply in the first half of this year, after a flurry of permits in the previous two years raised concern about the government's commitment to preventing the worst effects of climate change. A review of project documents by Greenpeace East Asia found that 14 new coal plants were approved from January to June with a total capacity of 10.3 gigawatts, down 80 per cent from 50.4 gigawatts in the first half of last year. Chinese authorities approved 90.7 gigawatts in 2022 and 106.4 gigawatts in 2023, a surge that raised alarm among climate...

Thurrock Council in Essex alleged that Liam Kavanagh, a Dubai-based businessman has misappropriated approximately £150m (€175.14m) that the council had invested in solar farm-backed bonds. The solar farm investments came as Thurrock Council became bankrupt in 2022. The council has now taken this case to the High Court, on fraud claims against Kavanagh, as well as his company Rockfire Capital. Kavanagh has denied these allegations, urging the court to throw out the claim. Between 2017 and 2020, Thurrock Council invested almost £400m (€467.02m) in British solar farm-backed bonds, in a series of ...

Authorities in North Macedonia are getting ahead with the green agenda to transition out of coal, the main energy resource of the country. With one of the country's main coal-fired thermal power plants, the state-owned power company Elektrani na Severna Makedonija (ESM), providing two-thirds of North Macedonia's electricity needs, many of North Macedonia's cities are listed among the ten most polluted in Europe, particularly during the winter. Converting the two thermal facilities in Bitola and Negotino from coal and fuel oil is part of the country’s strategy to phase out coal and other fossil...

European Commission competition officials have given the green light to €1.2 billion in government support for Spain’s fledgling renewable hydrogen industry, in a further boost to the country’s ambition of becoming a major producer of the climate friendly fuel. Under a scheme that will be funded entirely from Madrid’s share of the EU recovery fund set up in the wake of the covid pandemic, production plants with a capacity of 100 megawatts or more can apply for state support to develop ‘hydrogen valleys’ across the country. Green hydrogen is produced using renewable electricity – Spain has huge...

For the new venture, the two companies will operate approximately 3,000 high power charging points over the next five years, which will equate to 150kW or more and will be distributed across 300 EV hubs. The fast-charging stations are expected to be able to fully charge an EV battery in up to one hour, due to the use of direct current, instead of alternating current. The hubs will be located in key areas in and around cities and will be provided with renewable energy from both SSE and TotalEnergies. Many hubs are already under construction with the development research needed for several other...

EU energy ministers are due to discuss the business case for financing geothermal energy next week during an informal meeting in Budapest, according to an agenda seen by Euronews. Each national delegation will be asked to suggest new ways to “improve the commercial viability” of geothermal investments, notably incentives and cooperation between EU countries related to district heating and cooling — a system for distributing heat and cool generated in a centralised location through insulated pipes for residential and commercial use. Ministers will visit an operational geothermal drill in Tököl,...

Industry groups have warned Europe’s energy transition could be hampered if incoming rules on battery manufacturing do not allow firms to factor in long-term contracts for renewable electricity when calculating their carbon emissions. The EU has been actively promoting domestic battery production amid growing geopolitical tensions and fears of undercutting by market leader China – with strict environmental criteria designed to favour greener, European manufacturers. But draft rules on calculating indirect ‘scope 2’ emissions do count ‘power purchase agreements’ (PPA) for green electricity desp...
