The British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) has announced a new award for best children’s and family film. The new prize category will “celebrate the very best films appealing to intergenerational audiences” and “profile the essential creative contributions of the children’s media sector,” Bafta said in a statement. Films that have a certificate rating of U, PG or 12A will be eligible for the award. This is the first time in five years that Bafta has introduced a new prize category and it will be awarded starting from 2025 at the ceremony in February. Bafta held the British Academy...

Washington (AFP) - From developing a one-and-done coronavirus shot to overcoming misinformation and global vaccine inequity, Nobel prize winner Drew Weissman says that at 64, he's only "speeding up." The University of Pennsylvania immunologist was awarded the biggest accolade in medicine on Monday for his pioneering research on messenger RNA, the technology behind Covid-19 vaccines that changed the course of the pandemic. "What happened is I got a cryptic text from Kati around four in the morning," he said in an interview with AFP, referring to his old friend, collaborator and Nobel co-winner ...

Washington (AFP) - Drew Weissman's decades of research into mRNA technology paved the way for Covid-19 vaccines, finally earning a Nobel prize for the physician-scientist. The 64-year-old University of Pennsylvania immunologist, who won the Nobel Medicine Prize along with long-time collaborator Katalin Kariko on Monday, is far from done. His next quests include, among others, developing a vaccine against all future coronaviruses. "There have been three (coronavirus) pandemics or epidemics in the past 20 years," Weissman told AFP recently, referring to the original SARS virus, MERS and Covid-1...

Washington (AFP) - American physicist John Clauser won the 2022 Nobel Prize for a groundbreaking experiment vindicating quantum mechanics -- a fundamental theory governing the subatomic world that is today the foundation for an emerging class of ultra-powerful computers. But when he carried out his work in the 1970s, Clauser was actually hoping for the opposite result: to upend the field and prove Albert Einstein had been right to dismiss it, he told AFP in an interview. "The truth is that I strongly hoped that Einstein would win, which would mean that quantum mechanics was giving incorrect pr...

Washington (AFP) - Frank Wilczek, the Nobel-winning theoretical physicist whose research transformed humanity's understanding of the fundamental forces of nature, was announced Wednesday as the winner of the prestigious 2022 Templeton Prize. The 70-year-old told AFP he saw the award as a testament to the inspiring power of science, at a time when scientists themselves are increasingly under fire by anti-intellectual elements in society. "In the United States, where I live, it's in our face in recent years, and a whole political party is dedicated towards it. It's very unfortunate," the MIT pro...

Washington (AFP) - No fewer than eight of this year's 13 Nobel winners were American citizens, extending a historic trend tied to the strength of US academia and its ability to attract top world talent. American universities consistently dominate "Global top 100" rankings, with a mix of private "Ivy Leagues" with lavish endowments and prestigious state colleges. Since the first Nobels were awarded in 1901, the US has racked up 400 medals, followed by the United Kingdom with 138 and Germany with 111 -- these figures include people affiliated with multiple countries. "I'm really appreciative of...

Washington (AFP) - Drew Weissman's decades of research helped pave the way for mRNA Covid-19 vaccines, but the scientist isn't resting on his laurels. The University of Pennsylvania immunologist, who on Thursday shared the $3 million 2022 Breakthrough Prize in Life Sciences with his longtime collaborator Katalin Kariko, is now spearheading efforts to design a new vaccine against all coronaviruses. The Silicon Valley-backed award honors major discoveries with the highest cash amounts in science. "There have been three (coronavirus) pandemics or epidemics in the past 20 years," Weissman told AF...

Washington (AFP) - It would take 15 billion years for the clock that occupies Jun Ye's basement lab at the University of Colorado to lose a second -- about how long the universe has existed. For this invention, the Chinese-American scientist, along with Hidetoshi Katori of Japan, will split $3 million as co-winners of the 2022 Breakthrough Prize in Fundamental Physics. Working independently, the two developed techniques using lasers to trap and cool atoms, then harness their vibrations to drive what are known as "optical lattice clocks," the most precise timekeeping pieces ever built. By compa...
