overtourism
The demonstrations against tourist overcrowding that have already taken place in recent months in the Canary Islands and Mallorca have now reached Barcelona. Around 3,000 people took to the streets of Barcelona on Saturday evening to protest against mass tourism in the city, according to local authorities. More than 150 collectives, organisations and social movements took to the streets this weekend. The protesters shouted "tourists, go home" and symbolically sealed off hotels and restaurant terraces. They are calling for actions to curb tourism before a summer season projected to set new reco...

Many in Málaga fear that their city is becoming a theme park for tourists. Activists say the post-pandemic tourism boom has pushed locals to the limit by distorting the rental market and gentrifying the city centre. Marching under the slogan ‘Málaga for living, not surviving’, last weekend 15,000 people took to the streets to demand affordable housing and protest mass-tourism in the Costa del Sol city. Bernardo, 39, tells Euronews Travel that he went “to support people who are trying to live with dignity in Málaga”. For many, he says, the “situation is getting worse month by month due to the c...

We all want to see as much of a holiday destination as we can, but in places where public transport is scarce, it’s not always easy. Enter: Uber. The transport company has launched new boat options for this summer - from touristy cruises to yachts - meaning users of the service can access more places off the beaten track. The boats are being rolled out in some of Europe’s most popular tourist getaways. Just in time for the Olympics, Paris will play host to Uber Cruise, a free, one-hour trip set to run from 12 July to 3 August. Guests on the Seine-based adventure will be able to take in views o...

With the 2024 Olympics just weeks away, many of us are thinking a little more than usual about the host city, Paris. Ahead of the ever-popular sporting event though, there have been many criticisms of authorities and business owners putting prices up for the period, and of the French capital itself. Most first-timers in Paris arrive with an idealised view, expecting beauty at every turn, world class food and attractive people wearing perfect outfits. As a major city, this is not often the case and some tourists get a nasty shock when expectations don’t live up to the reality. There’s actually ...

Amsterdam is taking new steps to fight back against overtourism by launching plans to relocate its passenger cruise terminal to outside of the city centre. By 2035, none of the boats will be able to dock in the iconic capital. The announcement comes amid plans aiming to almost halve the number of cruise ships allowed to dock at the Passenger Terminal Amsterdam (PTA). Currently, the amount permitted is 190, but that’s slated to go down to a maximum of 100 from 2026. It’s been agreed that Rotterdam in the south will take more than 40 ships not welcome in Amsterdam from 2026. Fed up with hoards o...

With record-breaking numbers of visitors set to hit Spain this summer, the Costa del Sol is taking a pre-emptive strike against one less talked-about side effect of overtourism: pee. Taking inspiration from the northern Spanish town of Vigo, which introduced fines of up to €750 for “physiological evacuation on the beach or in the sea” two years ago, Marbella is following suit by more than doubling its own fine (previously €300) to match Vigo’s. Last week Marbella city councillors voted ‘sí’ to protect the sea, approving an ordinance that bans underwater urination at 25 beaches in the Malaga mu...

In recent years, the allure of traditional seaside vacations has begun to wane for many travellers. Overcrowded beaches, long waits at popular attractions, and the general hustle and bustle of mass tourism have created a less-than-ideal experience. As a result, a growing number of holidaymakers are seeking alternative ways to explore new destinations in comfort and style - with river cruises quickly becoming a popular choice for those looking to combine adventure with relaxation. The river cruise market is experiencing major growth. In 2024, the global river cruise market is projected to reach...
