What happens when one of the UK’s best hip-hop stars meets one of London’s most vibrant art galleries? Presumably, a bloody good time, that’s what. That is precisely what’s happening on 31 August, when Tate Modern Lates – a monthly event that is “a mix of art, music, film, workshops, talks and more,” according to the website – teams up with award-winning rapper Little Simz. The unique collaboration will see one of our favourite modern artists here at Euronews Culture take over the gallery with a specially curated evening of... well, see the description above. Simz – real name Simbiatu "Simbi" ...

When three sold-out concerts in Vienna were cancelled by organisers after officials announced arrests over an ISIS-connected terrorist plot last week, Swifties came together to celebrate and commiserate – and, it turns out, check out some of the city’s museums. A number of museums granted free entry to would-be concertgoers, including the Albertina, Jewish Museum, MAK (Museum of Applied Arts), Haus der Musik and Mozarthaus Vienna. Often decked out in merch – and therefore easily recognisable – thousands of Taylor Swift fans made the best of the situation and descended on these cultural hotspot...

Seattle’s Museum of Pop Culture is facing criticism for a Nirvana exhibition that says Kurt Cobain “un-alived himself.” The term “un-alived” originated on TikTok, in order to circumvent censorship from algorithms, which ban users for words like “suicide.” However, that language has manifested IRL, so much so that it’s in this Nirvana exhibit, Cobain did not die by suicide on 4 April 1994 at the age of 27 but “un-alived himself at 27.” Another sign explains the use of the term, reading: “We recognize the dynamic nature of pop culture and its role in shaping language and social discourse.” It co...

Art lovers visiting London may have Tate Modern, the National Gallery and Saatchi Gallery on their to-do lists (among a long list of others), but now there’s a new kid on the block: Moco is bringing yet more art to the British capital. With a collection including works by the likes of Jeff Koons, Jean-Michel Basquiat, Yayoi Kusama and Banksy (if you haven’t had enough of the guerrilla artist this week), the independent commercial museum has found its home at London’s iconic Marble Arch, taking over an expansive three-floor space – and giving the (often rather stressful) Oxford Street shopping ...

The Musée Rodin in Paris is set to open its first overseas branch in the Chinese city of Shanghai. Slated for September, the museum’s launch is timed to coincide with the 60th anniversary of diplomatic ties between France and China. Backed by the French Ministry of Culture and State Administration of Cultural Heritage of China, with additional private funding from French-Chinese art collector Wu Jing, the new venue will be known as the Centre d’Art Rodin. The China outpost of the French flagship institution – which focuses on the works of celebrated 19th-century sculptor Auguste Rodin – was in...

The Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao, Spain, has just installed 300 solar panels on its roof - part of its commitment to be climate neutral by 2030. The 80 kW photovoltaic installation will save around 5 per cent of the museum's electricity consumption and supply enough power to light its exhibition halls. But the modernist building by renowned architect Frank Gehry posed unique challenges for integrating the panels onto the roofs. To preserve the architectural integrity of the iconic structure, the colour and design of the panels had to be carefully selected and approved. With the need for green e...

Europe’s museums are overflowing with artefacts seized or looted from African, South American and Asian nations during colonial rule. The British Museum now has a dedicated page on its website to ‘contested objects’ like the Benin Bronzes or two large stone moai from Easter Island. Across the pond, the situation over the display of Native American artefacts is equally contentious. Hundreds of thousands of items that should have been returned under the federal Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act of 1990 still remain in museum custody. Native American tribes are still waiting ...

The National Portrait Gallery in London has announced the display of ‘Gloria’ (2023), a portrait depicting the British singer and songwriter Sam Smith. The artwork, depicting Smith as a scantily clad angel with wings and a harp, has never been publicly displayed, and was created by the French duo Pierre Commoy and Gilles Blanchard, also known as Pierre et Gilles. You can expect some reactionary takes from conservative pundits in the UK, who will doubtlessly clutch their pearls at the fact that the portrait of the five-time Grammy Award winner, known for his often explicit shows featuring sexua...

The Museum of London in the UK capital has had a rebrand - and its new logo has raised eyebrows. The institution, whose exhibits tell the stories of the lives of Londoners, has been renamed London Museum. It will open in new premises in Smithfield Market in 2026 after long delays and exceeding its budget. London Museum’s new logo makes a splatLondon Museum’s new logo is a clay statue of a white pigeon who has just done a glittery golden poop. According to director Sharon Ament, “The pigeon and splat speak to a historic place full of dualities,” with the logo representing the capital’s age-old ...
