The Mediterranean Sea reached its highest-ever surface temperature last week, according to Spanish researchers. The average of 28.9°C on 15 August, calculated with data from the European Union’s Copernicus Earth observation programme, topped the previous record set in July last year. A maximum temperature for the day of 31.96°C was also recorded on the Egyptian coast at El-Arish. Almost the entire basin is suffering under the effects of a marine heatwave. Sea temperatures have spiked, particularly close to shore. But these warm waters aren’t unique to this summer and the region is a hotspot fo...

A superyacht that sank off the coast of Sicily was likely struck by a waterspout made stronger by climate change, meteorologists have said. Waterspouts are whirling columns of air and water mist, and the Bayesian is believed to have been hit by a powerful one in the early hours of Monday morning. Three people, including Canadian-Antiguan chef Recaldo Thomas, are confirmed to have died. Two bodies were recovered from the wreck this afternoon, and four people remain missing, including British tech entrepreneur Mike Lynch and his 18-year-old daughter, Hannah. The boat is at a depth of 50m and is ...

Spain has sweltered under three heatwaves so far this summer, with temperatures reaching up to 43C in the southeast. But it's the heat of the sea that has some experts especially concerned. The Mediterranean "is on fire" meteorologist Marta Almarcha wrote in a post for Spain’s eltiempo.es weather portal yesterday. Last week, a sea surface temperature of 30C was recorded by a tide gauge in Pollença, Mallorca. Coastal areas around France and western Italy are also setting very high temperatures for this time of year. In fact, almost the entire Mediterranean basin is suffering a marine heatwave, ...

What would be the scope and responsibilities for a European Commission portfolio dedicated to the Mediterranean? Would such a commissioner oversee the EU's controversial migration deals with African countries? Radio Schuman sought answers with Hussein Baoumi, Foreign policy advocacy officer at Amnesty International in Brussels. We also pick up on intriguing analysis on the impact of the upcoming US elections on the ongoing war in Ukraine by former French Minister of Foreign Affairs and advisor to President François Mitterrand Hubert Védrine, interviewed by Euronews journalist Sergio Cantone. An aid group that rescues migrants stranded in the Mediterranean has said one of their missions was interrupted by armed bandits. The raiders boarded the overloaded boat and sped away after the migrants threw themselves into the sea for safety. According to video footage posted by SOS Mediterranee volunteers were helping 93 passengers from an overcrowded wooden boat onto the rescue vessel when the bandits approached in rubber dinghies. The hijackers climbed onto the boat where the migrants were crowded as the rescuers carried on evacuating them. After throwing themselves into the water for saf...

The Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission of UNESCO (IOC) is warning with 100 per cent certainty that a tsunami measuring over one metre will hit the Mediterranean in the next 30 years. Spanish newspaper La Razon reports that the danger zone is the Averroes fault beneath the Alboran Sea - roughly halfway between the Málaga coast and north Africa. An earthquake here could cause six-metre waves, which would reach Spain in as little as 21 minutes. In a best-case scenario, coastal residents would still only have 35 minutes to flee inland. Just how deadly would a Mediterranean tsunami be?There...

Offshore wind has become a staple of renewable energy production. But so far it has been mostly limited to shallow waters, restricting how many countries can take advantage of it. That could soon change thanks to floating wind. The technology consists of a turbine mounted on a buoyant substructure and anchored to the seabed with chains. This means it can be deployed in seas of 300 metres deep and more, compared to the more traditional system of mounting turbines on the seabed, which becomes uneconomical in depths of more than 60 metres. Because it allows wind production in deeper waters, the t...

With approximately 20 new non-native animals and plants discovered in European waters annually - and a staggering 70% of them found lurking in the Mediterranean - ocean experts are delving into the implications of these aquatic intruders. In the idyllic waters of Madeira, which are home to 70 non-indigenous species, researchers stumbled upon a troubling find just two years ago: a brown algae with the name Rugulopteryx okamurae. João Canning-Clode is the chairman of the Invasive Species Expert Group at ICES, the International Council for the Exploration of the Sea. He describes this algae disco...

Two devastating shipwrecks off Italy's southern coast have resulted in the deaths of at least 11 migrants and left 64 people missing, according to United Nations agencies. In the first tragedy, a boat carrying migrants from Turkey caught fire and overturned approximately 200 kilometres off the coast of Calabria. Survivors reported that the vessel had been at sea for eight days before the disaster struck. The Italian coastguard initiated a search-and-rescue operation following a mayday call from a French vessel in the vicinity. At least 12 survivors were rescued and taken to the port of Roccell...
