Argentine President Javier Milei's economic reforms were signed into law and immediately went into effect on Monday, marking the beginning of an era of privatization and deregulation aimed at revitalizing the country's struggling economy. Milei, alongside Chief of Cabinet Guillermo Francos and Minister of Economy Luis Caputo, signed the comprehensive reform package and its accompanying fiscal package this morning. "Argentina is immersed in a serious and deep economic, financial, fiscal, social, pension, security, defense, tariff, energy, health and social crisis without precedent, which affect...

Two Russian naval ships docked in Venezuela's La Guaira port on July 2 after exercises in the North Atlantic supposedly intended to "show the flag" in the region. The frigate Admiral Gorshkov and the replenishment tanker Akademik Pashin were part of a small group of vessels from the Northern Fleet that arrived in Cuba last month, along with a tugboat and a nuclear-powered submarine. The voyage, which has been closely tracked by the U.S., was broadly seen as a demonstration by Russia that it can still project naval power, even after the losses Ukraine inflicted on its Black Sea Fleet. The visit...

A couple dancing Darién bullerengue. Screenshot from video “Bullerengue de darien…” from the Asi Baila Panama YouTube channel. Fair use. Women are singing, a couple dances, and drummers play the greatest African instrument. This is the highly traditional Panamian dance, the bullerengue. The dance that is the product of a painful past continues today, no longer with so much pain although the wounds are still there. The song cries and the drum comforts it. High tradition that is now pure pride, knowing that the blood you carry in your veins is sacred. To talk about bullerengue we must also talk ...

A poster during a protest in Rio de Janeiro, on June 13, 2024, reads in English: ‘Forced pregnancy is torture! Neither arrested, nor dead.’ Photo by Fernando Frazão/Agência Brasil, used under license Thousands of Brazilian women took to the streets in different cities this mid-June to protest a proposed bill that could make access to safe and legal abortion even harder, criminalizing rape victims and taking back rights that are already guaranteed to them on the current legislation. The bill 1904/24 was proposed by an evangelical congressman, Sóstenes Cavalcante, of the same Liberal Party (PL) ...

These local miners do traditional and small-scale mini...

Volkswagen Beetle enthusiasts took part in a vehicle parade in Mexico City on Sunday (23 June) - a day after the car model's international day was celebrated. The Beetle, or 'Vocho' as it’s known in Mexico, may have been discontinued years ago, but restored and remade vintage models roll on in the Mexican capital, where they remain highly popular. In the northern neighborhood of Cuautepec, classic Beetles still line the streets - so much so that the area has been nicknamed 'Vocholandia.' For the residents of Cuautepec, these iconic cars are here to stay - for as long as physically possible.

How's it going in Javier Milei's Argentina? Milei, Argentina's self-described libertarian president, notched his first legislative victory last week. Argentina's Senate passed a major omnibus bill, also known as the "Bases Law", that's been debated since February. It would further deregulate the labor market, privatize national industries, cut taxes for foreign companies investing in Argentina, and hand emergency powers to Milei. Because Milei's party controls seven out of 72 Senate seats, the bill only passed with a lot of compromise and a tie-breaking vote by the vice president, and it could...
