Ottawa (AFP) - A labor dispute in Canada threatened to disrupt the North American economy on Thursday after the county's two rail operators shut operations, locking out nearly 10,000 workers. "Despite months of good faith negotiations ... parties remain far apart, and both CN and CPKC have begun their lockout," the Teamsters Canada Rail Conference union said in a statement, referring to Canadian National Railway (CN) and Canadian Pacific Kansas City (CPKC). The union representing the workers had given a midnight (0500 GMT) deadline to reach a deal. The disputes have centered around workers' c...

Washington (AFP) - The US jobs market was probably cooler than expected in the year through March, Labor Department data showed Wednesday, signaling weaker but still-positive growth. US employers were estimated to have added 818,000 fewer jobs than initially reported for the 12-month period, meaning job growth in the world's biggest economy was lowered by around 68,000 per month. While this marks a significant decline, it was less dramatic than the loss of up to one million predicted by some economists, and could be revised further. "You're looking at something that is significantly cooler tha...

The number of employed people in Germany continued to rise this spring, with the second quarter showing there were 46.1 million employed or self-employed people, a seasonally adjusted increase of 0.1% over the previous quarter. Still, these figures are lower than the EU average of a 0.7% quarterly and 0.8% annual second quarter increase. The last time Germany saw a decline in employment was in the first quarter of 2021, marked by the coronavirus pandemic. New jo...
