In the following exclusive excerpt from Let It Be Your Guide: The Kansas Album Review, former singer John Elefante joins Tim Durling as part of a larger roundtable discussion about his debut with Kansas, 1982’s Vinyl Confessions. The album was home to “Play the Game Tonight,” with Top 20 sales that were only outpaced by “Carry on Wayward Son” and “Dust in the Wind.” Still, Elefante was in the unenviable position of attempting to follow Steve Walsh, who sang both of those career-making hit singles. Vinyl Confessions went to No. 16, but Elefante exited after one more LP. In a period of deep tran...

In the wake of a debilitating cyberattack against one of the nation’s largest health care systems, Marvin Ruckle, a nurse at an Ascension hospital in Wichita, Kansas, said he had a frightening experience: He nearly gave a baby “the wrong dose of narcotic” because of confusing paperwork. Ruckle, who has worked in the neonatal intensive care unit at Ascension Via Christi St. Joseph for two decades, said it was “hard to decipher which was the correct dose” on the medication record. He’d “never seen that happen,” he said, “when we were on the computer system” before the cyberattack. A May 8 ransom...

Sheriff Calvin Hayden of Johnson County, Kansas, has admitted that a warrant he claimed to have allowing him to seize election ballots was not signed by a judge. Since 2019, Hayden claimed to be investigating election fraud, focusing on a software company the county used to manage poll workers. No charges have come from that investigation. While state law requires the county to destroy the ballots, the elections office had held off because of Hayden's purported investigation. But when they never received that warrant, and after being reminded of the law by the secretary of state's office, they...

Keystone XL pipeline has now leaked more crude oil than any other gas pipe in the United States in the past 12 years, following last week’s massive oil spill in Kansas. Over the weekend, TC Energy shut down the system after an oil spill released 14,000 barrels of oil into a creek in Washington County, Kansas. It was the worst leak in the 12-year history of the pipeline, which runs from Canada to the U.S. Midwest. The spill was the latest in a series of accidents in the last ten years and means that the total leaked by the pipeline is now an estimated 26,000 barrels, according to data from the ...

Olathe (United States) (AFP) - Abortion rights advocates celebrated Tuesday as the Midwestern US state of Kansas voted to maintain the right to the procedure, the first major poll on the flashpoint issue since the Supreme Court overturned nationwide access in June. Kansans rejected an amendment that would have scrapped language in the state constitution guaranteeing the right to the procedure and could have paved the way for stricter regulations or a ban. The vote was widely seen as a test case for abortion rights nationwide, as Republican-dominated legislatures rush to impose strict bans on t...

Leawood (United States) (AFP) - Campaign signs dot the tree-lined streets of the affluent Kansas town of Leawood, as the Midwestern state prepares to hold the first major vote on abortion since the US Supreme Court ended the national right to the procedure. Kansans head to the polls Tuesday to decide whether to change the traditionally conservative state's constitution to remove language guaranteeing the right to an abortion. Those in favor of the change -- "Yes" voters -- say it would allow legislators to regulate the procedure without judicial interference. "It just simply restores our abil...
