German electrolyser manufacturer Thyssenkrupp Nucera has revealed robust sales for the third quarter of 2024, driven mainly by its alkaline water electrolysis (AWE) business. Group sales during the third quarter surged 26% on a year-on-year basis touching €235.7m. For the AWE arm, sales shot up to €132.5m, up from €110.5m in the corresponding quarter last year. This was mainly driven by continuing progress at the Saudi Arabian NEOM water electrolyser project, as well as Sweden's H2 Green Steel project. Despite the rise in sales, earnings before interest and taxes fell to €0.7m in the third qua...

European Commission competition officials have given the green light to €1.2 billion in government support for Spain’s fledgling renewable hydrogen industry, in a further boost to the country’s ambition of becoming a major producer of the climate friendly fuel. Under a scheme that will be funded entirely from Madrid’s share of the EU recovery fund set up in the wake of the covid pandemic, production plants with a capacity of 100 megawatts or more can apply for state support to develop ‘hydrogen valleys’ across the country. Green hydrogen is produced using renewable electricity – Spain has huge...

The German government's plan to develop a national hydrogen-based energy grid by 2032 took another step forward on Tuesday as key transmission system operators submitted plans to build the network. The plans included pipelines totalling 9,666 kilometres, said the Economy Ministry. Economy Minister Robert Habeck called the application a decisive step in building critical infrastructure. "It contains the motorways of the hydrogen network," he said. The submission of the plans will create planning security for hydrogen producers, power plant operators, storage providers and consumers, Habeck adde...

The European Commission is sticking to a goal of ramping up ‘green’ hydrogen production from almost nothing to millions of tonnes a year by 2030 despite the European Court of Auditors (ECA) concluding today (17 July) that the target looks more aspirational than realistic. “The EU is unlikely to meet the targets it set for 2030,” lead author Stefan Blok told reporters ahead of the publication of an ECA report into EU hydrogen policy. “As a result, four years after the publication of the Hydrogen Strategy, we are calling for a reality check.” The highly flammable gas has been touted as a ‘green’...

Airbus, BMW and Michelin are among 11 companies set to receive millions in public subsidy to develop low-carbon hydrogen technology after EU competition officials approved a whopping package of state aid for an ‘important project of common European interest’ (IPCEI). The Hy2Move project, which as its name implies is intended to develop transport fuels, was prepared jointly by Estonia, France, Germany, Italy, Netherlands, Slovakia and Spain, who requested an exemption from single market rules that normally prohibit national subsidies. It is hoped the state aid will be matched by €3.3bn in priva...
