A Hungarian government minister has warned the EU that the country will send migrants to Brussels if the bloc continues to demand that it accept more asylum seekers. "If Brussels wants migrants, they will get them," Gergely Gulyás, minister for the prime minister's office told a press conference on Thursday. "We will give everyone a one-way ticket if the EU makes it impossible to stop migration at the external border." The minister made the incendiary remarks in reference to a heavy €200 million fine that the European Court of Justice (ECJ) handed down to Hungary in June for repeatedly ignorin...

Budapest is close to finalizing talks on "balanced" oil supply after Ukraine blocked the transit of Russian oil through the Lukoil pipeline, Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto said on Aug. 21 after a government meeting. Szijjarto did not specify which country or countries would export oil to Hungary to compensate for the lack of Lukoil supplies. In June, Kyiv imposed sanctions blocking Lukoil, one of the largest oil companies in Russia, from transiting crude oil through the Druzhba pipeline running through Ukrainian territory. The move aims to cut off one of the Kremlin's sources of in...

A Hungarian government decree amending rules on support for refugees fleeing war in Ukraine means thousands face being turfed out of emergency accommodation – and evictions have already begun, according to human rights advocates. Under the decree issued in June, as of today (21 August) only refugees from parts of Ukraine deemed to be affected by conflict are now eligible for free housing from the Hungarian state. There are currently 13 regions on the list, none of them in the westernmost part of the country. This leaves several thousand Ukrainian citizens, notably from the western Transcarpath...

The Hungarian government has responded to Brussels’ request for an explanation over its easing of entry requirements for Russian and Belarusian nationals, dismissing concerns it would undermine the security of the Schengen border-free travel zone. In a letter shared by the Hungarian minister for European affairs on social media channel X on Wednesday, Hungary’s home affairs minister Sándor Pintér claims that the National Card scheme - which was recently extended to Russians and Belarusians - would be issued "in accordance with the relevant EU framework and with due consideration of the securit...

Hungary celebrated more than 1,000 years of independence with a Saint Stephen's Day fireworks display in Budapest on Tuesday. Local media reports suggest the pyrotechnics event — spanning drones, fireworks and voice-over narration — cost over €38 million to put on at the five-kilometre stretch of the city's major waterway, the Danube River. But rains incorrectly forecasted by meteorologists meant that the Saint Stephen's Day celebrations were off to a slow start, with the event's commencement delayed by an hour. "The meteorologists did not do a top job," one onlooker told Euronews, as many aro...
