The European Commission said today it was examining whether a Hungarian law withdrawing state-funded shelter from Ukrainian refugees from regions not directly impacted by the war is in line with EU asylum rules, while Budapest said it was targeting only those who are able but unwilling to work. Some 120 Ukrainian citizens, mainly women and children of Roma ethnicity, were evicted from a privately run shelter in the town of Kocs on Wednesday (21 August), the day a government decree took effect which limits eligibility for accommodation to people from regions – currently 13, in the east and sout...

A Hungarian government minister has warned the EU that the country will send migrants to Brussels if the bloc continues to demand that it accept more asylum seekers. A Hungarian government decree amending rules on support for refugees fleeing war in Ukraine means thousands face being turfed out of emergency accommodation – and evictions have already begun, according to human rights advocates. There are currently 13 regions on the list, none of them in the westernmost part of the country. This leaves several thousand Ukrainian citizens, notably from the western Transcarpath...
