Last week, Cruise Port Rotterdam announced that onshore power supply, powered by wind and solar energy, will be available for cruise ships before the end of this year for cruise ships. Rotterdam is just one of many ports installing the infrastructure as ports work to meet the EU’s regulatory deadline to provide onshore power to ships by 2030. This technology, introduced by the cruise industry more than 20 years ago, can significantly reduce emissions by allowing ships to switch off engines and plug into an onshore power source to maintain onboard services. Today, about 50% of all cruise ships ...

A conveyor belt road could help Japan tackle two problems at once: greenhouse gas emissions and a shortage of lorry drivers. The latest plans for the 500 km route between Tokyo and Osaka were unveiled last month by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism (MLIT). They show goods being transported either on belts running down the middle of highways, alongside hard shoulders or through underground tunnels in automated, driverless electric vehicles. The 24-hour ‘Autoflow-Road’ could carry the same amount of cargo per day as 25,000 trucks. It could be operational within a decade...

Registrations of battery-electric cars declined by 1% in the EU last month, to 156,408 units, the European Automobile Manufacturers' Association (ACEA) said on Thursday. The total market share of these vehicles dropped from 15.1% to 14.4%, compared to the same month a year earlier. This was despite robust annual increases in a number of countries, notably Croatia (+161.4), Czechia (+140.8), and Hungary (+123.8). Respectively, these nations registered 298; 1,524; and 864 new battery electric cars in June. To rank numbers as opposed to growth rates, Germany stormed ahead with 43,412 new battery ...

For decades, Europe has mooted a more competitive rail sector that could seamlessly cross national borders and carry more passengers and freight. There have been huge strides forward with shared climate targets and more interoperability of train journeys across borders. But to boost rail as the go-to form of travel over more carbon-intensive alternatives such as short-haul flights, more work needs to be done on improving the experience for individual passengers. While ambitious plans to triple high-speed rail across the region by 2050 exist, with trains accounting for just 6% of inland passeng...

Multinational carmaker Stellantis, owner of brands including Vauxhall, Citroen, and Peugeot, could halt car production in the UK unless the state budges on its current EV quotas. "Stellantis UK does not stop. Stellantis production in the UK could stop," said Maria Grazia Davino, the firm's UK managing director. Speaking at the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders' annual summit in London earlier this week, Davino said a decision would be made in "less than a year". The UK's emissions targets require UK car manufacturers to sell a minimum percentage of fully electric cars, amounting this ...

Youth climate activists have won a "historic" settlement in Hawaii. The lawsuit was the world's first youth-led constitutional climate case seeking to address climate pollution from the transportation sector. It alleged that the US state violated the constitution by operating a transport system that harmed the climate and infringed upon the children's right to a clean and healthy environment. The activists asked the state government to take action and shift to a climate-safe, zero-emissions transportation system. Hawaii's governor and lawyers for the youth plaintiffs announced that the case wa...

Of all the decisions Paris Olympics organisers made about where to hold each sport, sending surfing competitions to the other side of the world - in the Pacific waters of Tahiti - provoked the strongest reactions. Tahitians and others railed against the building of a new viewing tower on Teahupo’o reef because of fears it would hurt marine life. But organisers say it wasn’t just the world-class waves that lured them to the French territory 16,000 kilometers away. Paris Olympic officials had set an ambitious target of halving their overall carbon footprint compared with the 2012 London and 2016...

Electric cars are being offered in some UK companies as a perk to attract young and environmentally aware employees. The idea is that an employee is signed up in a salary sacrifice scheme to allow them to lease an electric car through the company. According to Octopus EV's latest sustainable workforce report, more and more Gen Z and millennial employees are choosing to work for companies with similar environmental, social and governance (ESG) values as them. In several cases, a company's green values and benefits can be the deciding factor in whether or not a job applicant takes the offer. Gre...

Stand still anywhere in The Netherlands and before long cyclists will whizz past you demonstrating all manner of human functions. Getting changed, holding hands, carrying a cello, chair or chum - the list goes on. Is there anything the deft Dutch can’t accomplish on two wheels?
