The school, sheltering 700 Palestinians, was targeted for allegedly housing a Hamas command center. Civil defense teams are still searching for survivors. The strike adds to a growing toll on schools in Gaza, where displaced families face dire conditions. “They struck our homes, mosques, and even hospitals. Where do we go?” lamented Um Khalil Abu Agwa, a displaced woman. Israel's retaliatory offensive against Hamas militants has left more than 40,000 Palestinians dead and millions displaced.

A top EU diplomat has said he was horrified by images of a Gaza school hit by an Israeli strike which killed over 100. High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Police Josep Borrell said “there’s no justification for these massacres” and that a ceasefire was the only way to prevent the deaths of civilians. Borrell said the EU fully supports the call by leaders from the US, Egypt and Qatar to conclude ceasefire talks as well as a hostages release deal. He also noted that over 40,000 Palestinians have been killed since the conflict began and criticized Israeli Minister Bezalel Smotric...

An Israeli airstrike hit a school-turned-shelter in central Gaza on early Saturday, killing at least 100 people and wounding scores more, according to the Hamas-run Gaza government. The Israeli military acknowledged the strike on the Tabeen school in central Gaza City, claiming it hit a Hamas command centre within the school. Izzat al-Rishq, a top Hamas official, denied there were militants in the building. The facility, like almost all of Gaza’s schools, has been used as a shelter for people who have been forced to flee their homes by the war. Israeli intelligence indicated about 20 militants...

Leaders from the USA, Egypt and Qatar have demanded Israel and Hamas return to stalled talks on achieving a ceasefire in the war in Gaza next week, saying on Thursday that “only the details” remain to be negotiated. “There is no further time to waste, nor excuses from any party for further delay,” the parties said in a joint statement. Prime Minister of Israel Benjamin Netanyahu’s office said on Thursday that it had accepted the invitations. No immediate response to the offer was available from Hamas. Mediators from the USA, Egypt and Qatar set the talks for August 15 – to take place in either...

The leader of Hamas' al-Qassam Brigades, Mohammed Deif, was killed by an Israeli-targeted airstrike in Gaza in July, the IDF confirmed on Thursday. Israel targeted the Palestinian militant on 13 July after a strike hit a compound on the outskirts of the southern Gaza city of Khan Younis — but for weeks, the military said it was working to determine if he died in the blast. In a statement on Thursday, the Israeli military said that “following an intelligence assessment, it can be confirmed that Mohammed Deif was eliminated in the strike.” Hamas previously denied he was killed and has not commen...

Gaza war protesters took to the streets outside of the White House in Washington DC, where President Joe Biden met with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Thursday. Chanting “Arrest Netanyahu,” the protestors brought in an effigy of the Israeli leader wearing an orange jumpsuit with blood on its hands. A label on the jumpsuit read: “Wanted for crimes against humanity.” Protesters poured red liquid from jugs onto the street across from nearby Lafayette Park. A speaker said it “symbolised the blood of the Palestinians.” Holding up blood smeared hands, they yelled: “Shame!” and chanted:...

The IDF have ordered the evacuation of part of an area in the Gaza Strip that it has designated a "humanitarian zone", on Monday. The military said they plan to begin an operation against Hamas militants who have embedded themselves in the area and used it to launch rockets toward Israel. The area includes the eastern part of the Muwasi humanitarian zone, which is located in the southern Gaza Strip. Earlier this month, Israel estimated a million Palestinians are now in the humanitarian zone, which covers about 14 kilometres along the Mediterranean. Much of that area is now blanketed with tent ...

Civil defence workers have dug around 60 bodies out of collapsed buildings in two districts of Gaza City after the Israeli military pulled back following days of fighting against Hamas. The Israeli military launched an incursion into the Tal al-Hawa and Sinaah districts earlier this week to fight what it said were Hamas militants who had regrouped there. Videos circulating on social media showed civil defence workers wrapping bodies, including several women, in blankets on the rubble-strewn streets of Tal al-Hawa and Sinaah. About 60 bodies have been found so far, including entire families who...

The Israeli military has told all Palestinians to leave Gaza City and head southward as it escalates its offensive across the northern, southern, and central regions of the territory. Israel informed people in Gaza of the evacuation order by dropping leaflets urging “all those in Gaza City” to take two “safe routes” south to the area around the central town of Deir al-Balah. Gaza City, it said, will “remain a dangerous combat zone.” The military had ordered Palestinians to evacuate from eastern and central parts of the city earlier this week, but many stayed put after concluding there is nowhe...
