Jaguar Land Rover has become the latest luxury car maker to face problems because of flooding in Switzerland which wiped out a key aluminium supplier's factory. A reservoir damn collapsed in the Ural Mountains region of Chelyabinsk on Friday night, forcing residents of nearby villages to evacuate their homes. The dam at the Kialimskoye reservoir was unable to hold back rising waters due to heavy rainfall and broke, impacting four villages in the nearby region. Germany has just gone through its wettest year on record, with rainfall up by 35 per cent. An average of 1,070 litres of rain per square metre fell across the country from July 2023 to June 2024, compared with the 1961-1990 average of 789 litres. In Kokra, a village in the north, people from three houses were evacuated after heavy rains caused a landslide on Saturday. Austria and Switzerland are planning to invest €2.1 billion into flood protection on the Rhine river. An agreement was signed by both countries in May and has now been unanimously approved by the Austrian parliament. It is still awaiting approval from the Swiss government and could be subject to a referendum.
