Russia is using only five military airfields in occupied Crimea, two of which were hit by the Ukrainian military and are now functioning "at a minimum," Navy spokesperson Dmytro Pletenchuk, said on Aug. 13 on national television. Following the annexation of the Crimean peninsula in 2014, Russia began using local airfields to station its air force and launch attacks on Ukrainian cities. The occupied peninsula has been repeatedly targeted by Ukrainian drone and naval strikes, forcing Russian forces to withdraw much of its naval power and strengthen its air defenses. Ukraine’s surprise incursion into Russia’s Kursk Oblast over the past week is lifting some hopes for Ukrainian soldiers losing ground on the eastern front amid worsening manpower and ammunition shortages. Ukraine launched its stunning counterattack in the northeast into Russian territory 10 months into Russia’s renewed large-scale offensive across Donbas, where Kyiv's troops are clinging on to each position at a great cost as they attempt to grind down Moscow's offensive capabilities. “(The Kursk operation opened) a new section of the front,” said Oleksandr Maroshnyk, a 32-year-old Ukrainian s...

Liberating Crimea would be easier than retaking Donbas due to the peninsula's strategic features, Ukraine's military intelligence chief Kyrylo Budanov said in comments reported by Forbes Ukraine on Aug. 7. Russia has occupied Crimea and part of the eastern Donbas region since the start of its aggression in 2014. "From a military perspective, it is much easier to retake Crimea than Donbas, which has a front longer than 1,000 kilometers and a depth of over 200 kilometers," Budanov said during a speech at the Kyiv School of Economics. "Crimea has two entry points. One from the Russian side and on...

Ukraine's military said on Aug. 3 that a Ukrainian missile strike the day before sunk a Russian Black Sea Fleet submarine and damaged a S-400 air defense system in Russian-occupied Crimea. In a statement on Telegram, the military said that the Ukrainian strike had "significantly damaged" four launchers of Russia's modern S-400 Triumph air defense system. The military named the Kilo-class submarine Rostov-on-Don as the submarine that it says sunk in the port of Sevastopol. "As a result of the hit, the boat sank on the spot," the General Staff said in the statement. The military said that the su...
