Sweden's Riksbank cut its key interest rate from 3.75% to 3.50% on Tuesday, the second time borrowing costs have been lowered this year. Policy makers added that they are considering as many as three more reductions in 2024, provided that price pressures remain under control. In June, the bank’s approach was slightly more cautious, proposing a maximum of three rate cuts - which includes the one seen today. "The prime driver of the reduction is the decline of the Swedish inflation rate … which is close to the inflation target of the Riksbank of 2%," said Lars Jonung, professor emeritus at the K...

Year-over-year US inflation reached its lowest level in more than three years in July, the latest sign that the worst price spike in four decades is fading and giving hope that the Federal Reserve may cut the interest rate in September. Measured from a year earlier, prices rose 2.9% in July, down from 3% in June. It was the mildest year-over-year inflation figure since March 2021. Inflation has taken a central role in the presidential election, with former President Donald Trump blaming the Biden administration's energy policies for the price increases. Is your country more expensive than other European countries? Which goods and services are cheaper than the EU average in your country? Price level indices (PLIs) are designed to make these comparisons possible. They measure and compare the prices of goods and services between different countries. Essentially, PLIs indicate how much more expensive or cheaper goods and services are in a specific country compared with another country or group of countries, such as the EU or Europe. The "overall" indicator is the household final consumption expenditure, which includes the direct spending of resid...

Just as the Deutschlandticket gave Germans the ability to affordably travel their country by train for just €49 a month, a new project aims to give people unlimited cinema trips. Germany’s Federal Film Board (FFA) has announced a new scheme where cinephiles can take as many visits to the cinema as they like all for a monthly fee. The Cinifinity project is set to launch across Germany for just €12.50 a month. That’s a steal considering the average cinema ticket in Germany was €9.71 in 2023. Kensington and Bayswater is one of the wealthiest areas in the United Kingdom. But it’s also one of the most socially-divided. In the constituency’s south, upscale mansions line streets among the most prosperous in the world. Walk northwards, and these luxury homes butt up against crowded housing estates. This deep social divide often translates into razor-thin electoral margins. The seat - redrawn to include Bayswater as part of last year’s boundary review - was among the most marginal in the country in the 2019 general election, where the Conservatives edged ahead of Labour by just 150 votes...
