France's Bouygues Telecom has moved one step closer to gaining full ownership of La Poste Group after national competition officials approved the deal. La Poste Group, which runs France's mail service but also has a telecommunications service, already owns 51% of La Poste Telecom. The other 49% is under the control of French rival network operator SFR. "The Authority has ruled out any risk of harm to competition linked to the transaction on the markets concerned," competition officials said in a statement on Monday. Due to La Poste Telecom's "limited market share", they noted that there would ...

Apple announced an update to its App Store terms in the EU on Thursday (8 August) to allow developers to provide information and promote offers at external app marketplaces or websites to comply with the bloc's new competition rules. App developers can promote these alternative offers within their applications, including subscription prices available both in their apps and outside of them, Apple said in an update. They can also provide links that can be “tapped, clicked, or scanned,” to take customers to the other offers. The changes, which are set to apply in the autumn, come after the Europe...

The election of two former employees of tech giant Meta to the European Parliament in June revived the issue of revolving doors - movement of workers from the public to the private sector and private to public in a related field, a matter the European Commission is also set to opine on this week. “On the one hand, lobbying is beneficial to industry and to the public sector as it allows informed policy-making. On the other, it can pose a risk to the democratic tissue of society, as lobbying can undermine decision-makers' integrity and lead to favouritism if not appropriately regulated,” wrote t...

A new crop of European Parliament lawmakers tasked with dealing with economic affairs will focus on industrial policy, though some fear a free-for-all of state support, key MEPs have told Euronews. The European Parliament’s Economic and Monetary Affairs Committee, ECON, met for the first time today (23 July) since June elections, with new leadership and a sharpened political focus. “The last mandate was centred on environmental and geopolitical questions,” committee chair Aurore Lalucq (France/Socialists and Democrats) told Euronews, citing the fight against climate change and war in Ukraine. ...

Promoting your product is fine, but not if it means throwing shade on competitors, according to the EU. The European Commission today accepted Vifor’s commitments to remedy potential disparagement of a rival product. Those promises are now legally binding and the Commission could issue fines up to 10% of Vifor’s turnover if they’re broken. Brussels worried Vifor had restricted competition by spreading misleading information about the safety of Monofer, an iron deficiency treatment marketed by the company's main competitor, Pharmacosmos. The Commission suspected that actions by Vifor, in some c...

Bytedance, the parent company of video sharing app TikTok, has lost its appeal against a European Commission decision to consider it a gatekeeper under new competition rules, the General Court said in a judgment today (17 July). Last November TikTok joined Meta in appealing against being designated with 'gatekeeper' status under the Digital Markets Act (DMA), an EU law that brings in tougher rules for tech companies and makes it easier for users to move between competing services. TikTok said at the time that its designation “risks undermining the DMA's own stated goal by protecting actual gat...

“Every time I meet someone, they worry that I’m going to swim in the Seine,” says Léonie Périault, a French triathlete who won a bronze medal in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. Paris has spent €1.4 billion trying to allay those fears, building a giant underground tub to store wastewater so that it doesn't run into the Seine. It has been illegal to swim in Paris' iconic river for more than a century due to the dirtiness of the water. With less than two weeks to go until the Paris Olympics and events scheduled to take place in the river, a question hangs over the Games: Will the Seine River be clean en...

Commitments made by tech giant Apple to open up access to rivals to a standard technology used for contactless payments with iPhones – “tap and go” – were enough to address European Commission competition concerns, the EU executive said today (11 July). The Commission found in an investigation, started in June 2020, that excluding Apple Pay's rivals from the market would restrict innovation and choice for iPhone mobile wallet users. It said that Apple abused its dominant position by refusing to supply “near field communication” technology to competing mobile wallet developers, and by allowing ...
