The Mediterranean Sea reached its highest-ever surface temperature last week, according to Spanish researchers. The average of 28.9°C on 15 August, calculated with data from the European Union’s Copernicus Earth observation programme, topped the previous record set in July last year. A maximum temperature for the day of 31.96°C was also recorded on the Egyptian coast at El-Arish. Almost the entire basin is suffering under the effects of a marine heatwave. Sea temperatures have spiked, particularly close to shore. But these warm waters aren’t unique to this summer and the region is a hotspot fo...

Extreme heat and cold cause approximately 407,500 deaths in Europe every year, and if nothing further is done to combat climate change, an additional 55,000 people will die annually by the year 2100 – a 13.5 per cent increase, according to new estimates from European Commission researchers. Currently, the vast majority of Europe’s temperature-related deaths are tied to cold weather, but extreme heat will become an increasingly lethal challenge, particularly in southern Europe and areas with more elderly people, according to the study, which was published in The Lancet Public Health00179-8%2Ffu...

The Paris Agreement target of limiting global warming below 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels is no longer possible, a new study claims. While the rollout of green tech solutions has sped up in recent years, the realistic constraints of implementing climate policies in some countries could make this totemic climate goal impossible. “Limiting peak temperature to below 1.5°C is not possible with even moderate likelihood anymore,” says lead author of the study Christoph Bertram, associate research professor at the University of Maryland and guest researcher at the Potsdam Institute for Climate Im...

The first onshore Carbon Dioxide Removal project in the European Union was announced on Monday between carbon storage start-ups RepAir Carbon and C-Questra. The partnership will see the bloc’s first onshore Direct Air Capture and Storage (DACS) in France and could help Europe achieve its climate ambitions by removing carbon from the atmosphere. The Dutch carbon storage start-up C-Questra announced the partnership with the American carbon removal company RepAir Carbon, meaning carbon will be captured and stored. Current DAC solutions consume a lot of energy and can emit more CO2 than they captu...

A date has been set for public hearings at the International Court of Justice which could help define countries' legal obligations to fight climate change. The top United Nations court announced on Friday that public hearings will open on 2 December in a landmark case seeking a non-binding advisory opinion on "the obligations of States in respect of climate change." The UN General Assembly sent the case to the International Court of Justice last year. Secretary-General António Guterres said at the time that he hoped the opinion would encourage nations "to take the bolder and stronger climate a...

Firefighters in Türkiye continue to battle multiple blazes burning for a third day in several areas across the country’s west. The country's Disaster and Emergency Management Directorate, AFAD, says more than 131 forest fires have erupted in the past week. But Agriculture and Forestry Minister, Ibrahim Yumaklı, said most had been brought under control. He said the current situation doesn't warrant an international appeal for assistance but advised caution through the weekend. "We are in a critical period and must remain vigilant until Sunday. Our teams will respond day and night to any inciden...

By Hans Nicholas Jong JAKARTA — Civil society groups and communities most affected by the effects of climate change are calling on the Indonesian government to include them in the decision-making process of climate policies. Groups such as those representing the urban poor and the disabled say they haven’t been meaningfully involved in the process, particularly the drafting of Indonesia’s revised goals and commitments for reducing greenhouse gas emissions under the 2015 Paris Agreement. Every country that has signed up to the Paris climate deal must submit a list of these commitments, known as...

Will climate change force Belgian vineyards to put water in their wine? At first glance, rising temperatures seem to favour the development of vineyards in a country famous for its beer — in 2023, 3.4 million litres of wine were produced in Belgium, an increase of 13 per cent on the previous year. For a decade now, the number of vineyards in Belgium has been rising steadily as a result of climate change, according to Sébastien Doutreloup, a climatologist at the University of Liège. For its help in improving wine production, climate change also brings with it a number of obstacles. Climatic haz...

EDF has reduced its electricity production at nuclear sites in France in response to soaring temperatures. Three reactors are currently affected, although the energy provider has said "there is no safety risk". A reactor located at the Bugey nuclear power plant, a site near Lyon, has been closed since 12 August. Also near Lyon, the Saint-Alban nuclear plant has experienced production cuts since 11 August, and similar measures are being taken at the Tricastin site. This is located in the South East of France, north of Avignon. Heat-related incidents aren't a new complication for EDF but rather ...

Unprecedented wildfires in Canada and parts of Amazonia last year were made at least three times more likely by climate change, a new report has found. Wildfires in Greece, where blazes are currently burning around Athens, were made twice as likely by climate change. The ‘State of Wildfires’ report - published by the University of East Anglia (UEA), the UK Centre for Ecology & Hydrology (UKCEH), the Met Office and the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) - is the first annual stocktake of extreme fires. It looks at those that took place between March 2023 and February 202...
