12 EU countries are set to miss their national climate targets under the Effort Sharing Regulation (ESR), according to a study analysing national climate plans. Another seven are at risk of not meeting their goals. If they don’t meet their required emissions reductions, they may have to pay financial penalties. Heatwaves and floods have had a hugely detrimental impact on India’s tea production, with excessive heat in May followed by flooding in Assam hitting output level. As a result it's estimated that the average price of tea could rise by up to a fifth. Currently, China, India, Sri Lanka and Kenya are the biggest tea producing nations globally, accounting for about 75% of worldwide supply, according to Palais des Thes. Authorities in Albania have requested assistance from the European Union to help tackle wildfires in the south of the country. Interior Minister Taulant Balla said on Thursday the government has asked for help from the European Commission's Emergency Response Coordination Centre (ERCC). Austria and Switzerland are planning to invest €2.1 billion into flood protection on the Rhine river. An agreement was signed by both countries in May and has now been unanimously approved by the Austrian parliament. Hurricane Beryl has strengthened into the highest level category 5 storm, sweeping across several islands in the south eastern Caribbean and killing at least six people.
