Since the start of June, Brussels has been the first city in Europe to make a complete transition to electric vehicles away from horse-drawn carriages for city tours. Thibault Danthine launched his project this summer with two new vehicles after winning a call for funding from the city of Brussels in 2022. Danthine, as city carriage operator, told Euronews that the transition was inspired in part by the ethical dilemmas of horse-drawn carriages. "There were logistical and human resources issues. It was getting harder and harder to find drivers. And ethics are changing, the relationship with an...

Brussels' historical Flower Carpet is shaking things up this year and breaking with tradition in the hopes of attracting a new and younger audience. According to event organisers, up until now, the Flower Carpet's motif each year was linked to a specific idea, such as a cultural event, a guest country of honour or a specific anniversary. This year, things will be different. The carpet's motif will instead be "a nod to Brussels and Art Nouveau", in an event that will take place between 15 and 18 August. The flowers used in the carpets have also traditionally been begonias. However, this year, m...

Call it nostalgia for traditional messaging; classic postcards are making a comeback in Belgium this summer. Belgium's national postal operator, Bpost, is seeing a steady decline in physical mail but postcards are immune to the trend. "It's a bit of a retro object. It's true that my generation might think we use postcards less, but we choose them. As a physical object we keep, it's also a souvenir for the person who receives it," says one young Belgian. "For me, it's really important to capture that moment and share it with the person," says another. "And yeah, for me, it's really a vector of ...

In Germany, the intense heat of the preceding days triggered the first of the major storms, with the North Rhine-Westphalia, Lower Saxony, Bavaria and Baden-Württemberg regions most affected. The storms are expected to move towards Schleswig-Holstein and Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania in coming days. Severe weather warnings were in place in North Rhine-Westphalia, where rain and hail flooded streets, motorways and cellars. The emergency services were deployed to the area but reported...

Belgium did not take part in the triathlon mixed relay in Paris on Monday, the Belgian Olympic Committee said after one of the country's athletes became sick and withdrew from the competition. Pierre Rabadan, deputy mayor of Paris in charge of sport, the Olympic and Paralympic Games and the Seine, told FranceInfo on Monday morning that other athletes were sick in the Olympic village who did not swim in the river. "Nothing allows us to...

Six cases of raccoon roundworm — a parasite that can cause neurologic and ocular disease in humans — have been discovered in Belgium for the first time. The w...

On Monday, Belgium will start receiving a total of 12 medical patients from Gaza as the Israel-Hamas war enters its 10th month. Three of the youngest, aged 6 to 10, need cancer treatment and will be accompanied on the journey by their families. The move comes just days after Spain welcomed 16 young patients and their relatives, in what is expected to be the start of a wave of similar evacuations after the EU committed help to Gaza in a deal struck in tandem with the Palestine Children's Relief Fund (PCRF), and the World Health Organisation. "These patients have been evacuated through the PCRF ...

Determined not to lose out to the beach over the summer, one Belgian museum has an innovative solution to keeping visitor numbers up: opening its own pop-up pool. In fairness, Antwerp’s Museum aan de Stroom (MAS) – the city’s largest museum and a crowd favourite – probably doesn’t need to worry too much about its popularity, but offering the chance to combine cultural adventures with a refreshing dip can’t be a bad thing. On 28 July, and for the following six Sundays, visitors can dive into exhibits exploring Antwerp and its connection to the world, before taking the plunge at the historic Bon...

By Sean Walsh France advanced to the quarter-finals of Euro 2024 with a 1-0 win against rivals Belgium. A late own goal from Jan Vertonghen was all that separated the two sides in Dusseldorf as Les Bleus just about ran out as victors. The Red Devils shut up shop for much of the evening but were wasteful on the counter attack and head home with a whimper.
