Great news for beer lovers globally: the hop picking season has kicked off in the Czech Republic, the third largest grower and exporters of hops in the world. The season of hop picking in the country started on 17 August, and is expected to last two weeks. About 70 per cent of the harvest is destined for export, mostly to China and Japan. While there has been a reduction in beer production since COVID-19, there has been a rise in demand for premium beers with higher hop content. The current area of hop farms in the Czech Republic is 4,852 hectares, which is six hectares less than last year. Th...

The popularity of lager brand Madrí Excepcional is eating into the success of Carlsberg in the UK, the CEO of the Danish brewer has told British newspaper The Telegraph. Launched in UK pubs in 2020, the Madrí brand centres around Spanish culture, marketing itself as "the soul of Madrid". That's despite the fact that the beer is actually brewed in the English county of Yorkshire by the Canadian-American multinational Molson Coors - which also owns Doom Bar, Carling, and Blue Moon. According to data experts NIQ, Madrí Excepcional brought in annual sales of £93.3mn (€108.9mn) last year. Molson Co...

Operating for three years, the Fuerst Wiacek brewery in the German capital makes mostly high-end craft beer and is known for its high-quality IPAs and traditional German beers. Once a week, a local Berlin farmer drives his tractor to the brewery and picks up the spent grain used to brew the supply. "The cows really enjoy it and are already waiting," farmer Christoph Brundke told Euronews. Recycling spent grain isn't the only way the brewery tries to be environmentally friendly. "We attempt to source a significant amount of our power from solar," said the head of sales, George Shumay. "It doesn...

Lost amid the drive to expand alcohol delivery in the wake of COVID-19 has been the corresponding push—actually starting even before the pandemic—to allow more types of stores to sell alcohol. While more and more states have allowed grocery stores to sell booze in recent years, these efforts have been fiercely resisted by independent liquor store owners who claim that their small businesses will be forced to shutter if large chain retailers are suddenly able to sell alcohol. Up until now, these debates have largely been devoid of actual data, but new empirical research has been published showi...

The southern German city of Munich will see its first alcohol-free beer garden open on Thursday, according to local officials. The business, named "Die Null" or "Zero" in English, is located by Munich Central Station and the Old Botanical Garden, in Karl-Stützel-Platz. Partially responding to slowing demand for alcohol in Germany, Die Null will only serve non-alcoholic drinks. Cultural events will also take centre stage at the venue, which will host bands, choirs, solo artists, and dancers. The project, explained Munich's council, is intended to "revitalise" an area that has fallen prey to cri...

The decline came as a surprise to the Bavarian hops traders, according to BarthHaas, which is based in the southern German city of Nuremberg. The figures came from its annual report. "After recording slight growth in 2022 despite adverse conditions, we also expected a small increase for 2023," said Peter Hintermeier, co-managing of the group. Germany remains the world's fifth biggest beer producer, although output fell by 3.3% to just under 8.5 billion ...

A major German brewery on Friday reported disappointing figures for the beer industry in June, with an expected boom in consumption during the men's UEFA European Championships having failed to materialize. Veltins representative Michael Huber said the "European Championship effect has flopped for the breweries," as rainy weather and a change in drinking habits dampened sales despite Germany hosting the tournament. The brewery said German drinkers consumed an estimated 8 million hectolitres of beer in June, lower than in the same month in 2023. One hectolitre is 100 litres. German breweries se...

In 1791, a proud and hearty band of rabble-rousers in western Pennsylvania protested the first tax ever to be levied on a domestic product by America's new federal government—a tax on the sale of whiskey. Today, the Whiskey Rebellion is primarily remembered as one of the country's first populist uprisings—and one that presaged many future clashes between the American heartland and government elites. However, debates over whether Alexander Hamilton's whiskey tax was a prudent revenue-raising scheme or an egregious instance of governmental overreach often overlook what was not in dispute during ...
