Around 500 bears are set to be shot in Sweden from tomorrow as the country’s annual licensed hunt begins. In total, the government has approved the killing of 486 brown bears \- 20 per cent of the wild population - between 21 August and 15 October. Campaigners say this “trophy hunt” is incompatible with the large carnivore’s status as a strictly protected species within the EU. “There are several ways to better live side by side, with many more than 3,000 bears in Sweden,” says Magnus Orrebrant, chairman of the Swedish Carnivore Association. “By taking preventive measures to avoid damage and b...

A mother bear believed to be responsible for an attack on a French hiker earlier this month has been killed in Italy. Animal rights activists said the killing of the bear identified as Kj1 leaves her three cubs in “serious difficulty to survive”. The alpine Italian province of Trento confirmed the killing on Tuesday, despite protests by activists. The International Organization for Animal Protection said the order for her killing was issued overnight, making it impossible to seek a legal stay. “OIPA Italia is disconcerted at the culling of Kj1, which we tried to save with two legal actions,’’ ...

From January to mid-July, Slovakian authorities and hunters alike killed more than three dozen bears, leading to uproar among ecologists and activists. The authorities shot 30 so-called "problematic" bears, and hunters were allowed to hunt down another 11, Milan Boroš, the general director of Slovakia's State Nature Conservancy office, has announced. Last year, a series of attacks, some of them deadly, led to calls to reassess the protected status of bears in Slovakia and more widely across Central and Eastern Europe. Now, Slovakia’s far-right environment minister, Tomáš Taraba, wants to ensur...

Los Angeles (United States) (AFP) - Set in the chaotic world of a top restaurant kitchen, where each chef has their own unique skill set and emotional baggage, "The Bear" on Wednesday broke the Emmys record with the most nominations for a comedy in a single year. What makes the show's latest haul of 23 nods even more remarkable is that, for many critics, "The Bear" is barely a comedy at all, dealing with hard-hitting issues from death and mourning to betrayal and emotional abuse. "You find laughter in grief," said Ebon Moss-Bachrach, the actor who won an Emmy at the last gala playing restauran...

The recent dramatic death of a 19-year-old hiker by a brown bear in Romania — one of the European Union's most forested countries — has prompted politicians into action. Romanian Prime Minister Marcel Ciolacu has called for an extraordinary parliamentary session in Bucharest at an unspecified date to establish intervention measures when the animals are dangerous or in the "danger zone". This could include shooting the brown bear when it becomes aggressive. "There's overcrowding in certain areas. They don't have enough food and that's why they come down," he told reporters at a press conference...

Romanian authorities are moving 30 bears from Transfăgărășan to Zărnești Sanctuary, following a report by Euronews Romania. This comes as the Environment Minister is planning to issue an order or amend the law to address the safety issue of bears being seen too often. Last year there were over 400 bear sightings in Vidraru-Transfăgărășan and already 120 this year as the tourist season starts. Each sighting means a police intervention, so the situation is getting serious. In a statement to Euronews the Minister of the Environment said: “We will solve this problem fast” and either an order or a ...

Los Angeles (AFP) - Voters in the US were busy addressing weighty issues Tuesday, casting their ballots for the overall champion of a national park's annual Fat Bear Week. The final day of voting saw contestants "128 Grazer" and "32 Chunk" battling it out for the crown of biggest bruin in Alaska's Katmai National Park. The contest asks members of the public to compare before-and-after pictures of brown bears as they stuff themselves full of salmon in preparation for the lean months of hibernation. The champion is the bear who makes it through the series of head-to-head match-ups. "Your vote de...

Washington (AFP) - Polar bears have long symbolized the dangers posed by climate change, as rising temperatures melt away the Arctic sea ice they depend upon for survival. But quantifying the impact of a single oil well or coal power plant on the tundra predators had eluded scientists, until now. A new report published in the journal Science on Thursday shows it is possible to calculate how much new greenhouse gas emissions will increase the number of ice-free days in the bears' habitats, and how that in turn will affect the percentage of cubs that reach adulthood. By achieving this level of g...
