Wildfire smoke exposure may increase the risk of dementia more than other types of air pollution, according to a new study. The research findings were reported at the Alzheimer’s Association International Conference in the US. Wildfire smoke contains fine particles known as PM2.5, which are about 30 times smaller than the diameter of a human hair. They can be inhaled deep into the lungs, move to the bloodstream, and can cause or worsen heart and lung diseases. The latest research adds to evidence these particles may play some role in dementia, too. Researchers tracked health records from 1.2 m...

A two-day informal summit on environment drew to a close today, with host Hungary hailing progress on water resilience and cross border pollution in talks overshadowed by anger at the government’s use of it’s turn as EU Council presidency holder to further its own political agenda. Hungary invited EU countries to investigate how much cross-border transfer of particulate matter, a harmful form of air pollution caused by burning fossil fuels and road transport, contribute to poor air quality in their own territories, and how much of it they might be exporting to their neighbours, Hungarian envir...

Exposure to air pollution can significantly lower the chance of having a live birth after in vitro fertilisation (IVF), according to new research that indicates poor air quality impacts fertility at an earlier stage than previously known. The study included roughly 1,800 patients and 3,700 frozen embryo transfers from 2013 to 2021 in Perth, Australia. Researchers analysed exposure to fine particulate matter at various points before the patients’ eggs were collected, and followed them throughout their pregnancies later on. Women who had the highest level of pollutant exposure in the two weeks b...

Thousands of cases of high blood pressure, diabetes and dementia across Europe could be linked to tiny particles emitted by planes, according to a new study commissioned by campaign group Transport & Environment (T&E). More than 10 per cent of Europe’s total population - 52 million people - live within a 20km radius of the 32 busiest airports in the continent. This means they are particularly exposed to these ultrafine particles (UFPs) emitted by the jet engines of planes that take off and land there. Some studies suggest UFPs may be linked to an increased risk of respiratory diseases, cardiov...

Living in the beautiful hustle and bustle of Paris, one of Europe’s noisiest cities, comes at a cost to the body. Around 80 per cent of people in the Ile-de-France region are affected by both sound and air pollution levels that exceed World Health Organisation (WHO) recommendations, according to joint analysis from the Bruitparif and Airparif organisations. Those living in the heart of Paris are particularly bombarded by noise - which is the second-largest environmental driver of ill health in Europe, WHO warns. To tackle the threat, authorities are seeking to reduce noise across the capital b...

Most of the surface ozone that leads to premature deaths in Europe comes from beyond the continent’s borders, according to a new study. Researchers from the Barcelona Institute for Global Health (ISGlobal), with the French National Institute of Health and Medical Research (Inserm) and the Barcelona Supercomputer Center, calculated the impact of imported ozone across 813 regions in 35 European countries. They found that roughly 60 per cent of all deaths attributable to ground-level ozone (O3) came from outside Europe’s borders. Just under 12 per cent of deaths attributable to the air pollutant ...

We know that air pollution surrounds city-dwellers, but what difference would it make if we could actually see it? By combining ‘digital light painting’ with air pollution sensors, researchers and artists have found a way to make the invisible visible. Their photos highlight the health risks of particulate-crowded skies in Wales, India and Ethiopia. “Air pollution is the leading global environmental risk factor,” says Professor Francis Pope, an environmental scientist at the UK’s University of Birmingham, who led the project with artist Robin Price. “By painting with light to create impactful ...

By Hera Rizwan The Energy Policy Institute at the University of Chicago, on Tuesday, released the Air Quality Life Index (AQLI) report which stated that air pollution stands as the "most significant external menace to human life expectancy," causing a reduction of the average worldwide lifespan by 2.3 years. According to the report, air pollution causes more than three times the harm of alcohol and more than five times that of car crash injuries. Not a single country in the world fulfilled the World Health Organization's air quality criterion, which is 5 micrograms of pollutants per cubic metr...

By The Conversation On the morning news, you see the weather forecast is for high heat, and there is an "excessive heat watch" for later in the week. You were hoping the weather would cool down, but yet another heat wave is threatening human health and increasing the chance of wildfires. On top of these warm days and nights, air quality data has been showing unhealthy levels of pollution. Sound familiar? This scenario is increasingly the new normal in many parts of the world. High heat and air pollution are each problematic for human health, particularly for vulnerable populations such as olde...

By Sana Fazili Two Indian cities — Delhi and Kolkata — have have topped the charts of the world's most polluted cities in the latest report on global air pollution. Mumbai has been ranked 14th according to the report released by the State of Global Air. India, in fact, is home to 18 of the 20 cities with the most severe increase in PM2.5 pollution from 2010 to 2019. The latest State of Global Air Report is part of an initiative on air quality between the Health Effects Insitute and the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation, with inputs from the University of British Columbia.
